About The Position

Oracle is hiring a Lead Principal Network Engineer for its Internet Edge, based in Nashville, Tennessee, or Austin, Texas. The role sets technical direction and roadmaps for Internet Edge connectivity, including internet transit, peering, private interconnects, internet exchanges, and connections to DDoS protection providers. It defines resilient routing and connectivity designs that balance availability, performance, and cost across regions, and uses traffic and performance data to guide network decisions, capacity planning, and traffic engineering. The engineer leads multi-region network architecture and operations across on-premises, cloud, and interconnect environments. The work spans routing and overlays, cloud networking, security controls, automation and infrastructure as code, telemetry and service-level objectives, complex change and incident management, and authoritative documentation and standards. The role partners with backbone and transport teams, other engineering groups, external providers, security and governance teams, and business leadership. It also advises on technical and vendor choices, mentors engineers, and contributes to design reviews, hiring, and organizational talent development.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction and roadmap for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s Internet Edge, including transit, peering, private interconnects, internet exchanges, and DDoS-provider connectivity.
  • Define routing policies and resilient connectivity designs that balance availability, performance, and cost across regions.
  • Use traffic and performance data to guide peering, transit, and traffic-engineering decisions and resolve complex routing problems.
  • Forecast traffic patterns and identify connectivity and capacity needs for high-volume media workloads and other growing customer demand.
  • Partner with backbone and transport owners on capacity planning, edge deployments, and circuit changes.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives and technical reviews from design through rollout, managing risks associated with high-impact changes.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex incidents, improve service-health visibility, and drive durable fixes for recurring problems.
  • Advise leadership on technical and provider choices, document designs and operational practices, and mentor engineers.
  • Lead multi-region architecture for IP planning and routing, including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, EVPN/VXLAN, and SDN overlays across on-premises, cloud, and interconnect environments.
  • Define failure domains, traffic-engineering and high-availability patterns, and ECMP; validate designs through labs, failure or chaos testing, and staged rollouts.
  • Codify network standards and reference designs and drive adoption beyond the immediate line of business.
  • Design and operate cloud networking, including VPC/VNet hub-and-spoke, TGW/VCN transit, PrivateLink and service endpoints, NAT, and hybrid or inter-cloud connectivity.
  • Engineer scalable L4/L7 load balancing and service insertion, and implement blue/green and canary strategies aligned with SLOs and cost targets.
  • Create reusable blueprints for consistent, compliant deployments across programs and regions.
  • Architect zero-trust segmentation, ACL and policy frameworks, IPsec/TLS, and DDoS/WAF integrations, including control-evidence paths.
  • Lead rulebase lifecycle management to reduce attack surface and technical debt, and partner with Security/GRC on audits.
  • Embed preventative controls such as policy-as-code, least privilege, and change guardrails in pipelines.
  • Own reusable Terraform modules and Ansible collections, and enforce code quality, policy-as-code, and test gates in CI/CD.
  • Build validation, drift-detection, and orchestration tooling using Python and APIs; standardize source-of-truth and GitOps practices across teams.
  • Track and improve DORA metrics, including lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR.
  • Define SLIs and SLOs and architect telemetry pipelines using SNMP, streaming telemetry, NetFlow/IPFIX, and flow logs for health, capacity, and security.
  • Lead cross-team capacity and performance reviews, forecast growth, and optimize placement and routing.
  • Lead complex change events and incidents across teams, managing risk, stakeholder communications, and post-incident actions.
  • Advise line-of-business leadership on reliability, cost, and compliance trade-offs and vendor or technology choices.
  • Influence partner roadmaps and evaluate features for total cost of ownership and resiliency improvements.
  • Publish authoritative design documents, diagrams, runbooks, and line-of-business standards, ensuring traceability to requirements and controls.
  • Run design and change reviews, capture decisions and lessons learned, and evolve reference architectures and modules.
  • Mentor engineers through reviews, pairing, and technical talks, and foster inclusive collaboration.
  • Manage and direct timelines, deliverables, and budgets when applicable for critical, high-impact initiatives; anticipate and plan for changes in resources or timelines as business priorities shift.
  • Influence cross-functional leaders and external stakeholders to align on strategic objectives, and build partnerships with business leaders, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Lead advanced problem-solving efforts, guide data-driven investigation of ambiguous issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions that prevent recurrence.
  • Serve as an organizational thought leader, monitor emerging technologies and standards, share knowledge, and apply new expertise to advance the organization.
  • Develop and implement improvements to processes and workflows, evaluate their effectiveness, and establish metrics to measure success.
  • Contribute expertise to talent strategy, candidate interviews and assessments, and hiring decisions.
