About The Position

Oracle’s Technical Strategy & Engineering team, within the Corporate Systems and Strategy organization, is seeking a Lead Principal Application Software Engineer (IC5) to lead engineering practices and architecture. The team modernizes corporate systems, processes, and data, partnering with existing delivery teams and addressing critical gaps through focused applications, reusable AI skills and tooling, and corporate data lake strategy and governance. This senior individual contributor will define the technical vision, guide engineering decisions, and improve how teams build, review, test, deploy, and operate software. The role translates that vision into a prioritized roadmap and delivers through hands-on implementation as well as guiding contributions from other engineers. It requires resolving complex problems, guiding team execution, and upholding standards for accuracy, reliability, and measurable outcomes through technical contributions, design oversight, coaching, and partnership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience designing, building, and operating enterprise applications, cloud services, or developer platforms, with demonstrated technical leadership across teams; relevant postgraduate education may count toward this experience.
  • Record of setting technical direction and delivering engineering improvements through hands-on implementation and guidance of other engineers, from proposal through sustained adoption.
  • Strong software development skills in JavaScript or TypeScript and one or more of Java, Python, or Go.
  • Experience with modern web applications, REST APIs, SQL, and relational data modeling.
  • Experience making architectural decisions, leading design reviews, and evaluating emerging technologies, with sound judgment in security, accessibility, reliability, performance, scalability, compatibility, and maintainability.
  • Hands-on experience with Git-based source control, peer review, automated unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and safe production deployments.
  • Experience resolving complex production and integration failures, using observability to diagnose systemic issues, and guiding engineers in incident response, reliability, and recovery.
  • Experience applying AI-assisted development tools with effective review and testing; ability to assess their output and establish practices for secure, reliable use.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, mentoring, and stakeholder influence skills.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into delivery plans and lead execution across competing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with OCI or another major cloud platform, infrastructure as code, containers, and orchestration.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms, reusable engineering tooling, or shared CI/CD capabilities used by multiple teams.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, PL/SQL, and query optimization, along with enterprise identity integration, single sign-on, multifactor authentication, and role-based access control.
  • Experience with enterprise systems modernization, corporate data platforms, data lake architecture and governance, workflow automation, or reusable AI capabilities.
  • Experience evaluating AI coding assistants and agentic tools for codebase exploration, test generation, refactoring, migrations, and documentation, using measurable quality and productivity outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Set the engineering practices roadmap with teams and leadership; align priorities, establish ownership and success measures, and drive adoption through implementation and guidance.
  • Define technical scope, make architectural decisions, and approve designs across applications, AI capabilities, and data platforms.
  • Guide security, scalability, recovery, and data governance, including accuracy, traceability, and fine-grained access.
  • Define cross-team API governance, versioning, interoperability, and dependency management practices.
  • Lead modernization and migration decisions with clear compatibility and deprecation plans.
  • Select development tools and workflows; write foundational code and prototypes and deliver reusable templates, reference implementations, and self-service automation with engineers.
  • Establish source code management and peer review standards for repository structure, branching, ownership, and change traceability; coach reviewers and oversee critical changes.
  • Set expectations for automated unit, integration, regression, performance, security, and accessibility testing, and integrate reliable tests and actionable quality checks into development and release workflows.
  • Guide adoption of approved AI coding assistants and agentic workflows, establishing evaluation, testing, and human review practices that protect code quality, confidential information, and architectural integrity.
  • Define CI/CD standards and lead pipeline implementation covering reproducible builds, artifact management, environment configuration, deployment validation, progressive rollout, and rollback.
  • Define observability strategy, select tools, and implement instrumentation, metrics, logs, tracing, dashboards, and alerts with engineers.
  • Establish service-level objectives, error budgets, and incident tooling; use production signals to prioritize reliability and performance improvements.
  • Establish production-readiness standards, incident response, runbooks, and recovery practices.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for severe multi-system failures; resolve systemic defects with engineers and guide users and stakeholders to prevent recurrence.
  • Partner with security teams and technical leaders on secure development practices and automated vulnerability checks.
  • Lead vulnerability remediation, application upgrades, patching, and associated testing.
  • Mentor engineers, resolve cross-team dependencies, and communicate risks and trade-offs.
  • Measure business impact, developer productivity, release safety, operational health, and cost to guide continued improvement.
