About The Position

Ardmore Roderick is seeking a Lead Plumbing Engineer to join their team in Chicago, IL. This role involves serving as the plumbing lead on infrastructure projects, from concept through closeout, managing scope, schedule, and deliverables with minimal oversight. The position offers a potential for hybrid work depending on client, project, and team needs. The Lead Plumbing Engineer will be responsible for the full plumbing design scope, including various piping systems, BIM modeling, code compliance, client interaction, and mentoring junior staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • CPD (Certified in Plumbing Design) required
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in plumbing engineering design, with demonstrated ability to independently lead projects
  • Strong working knowledge of the City of Chicago Building Code, Illinois Plumbing Code, Illinois Energy Conservation Code, IPC, IECC, and other relevant codes and standards
  • Experience preparing and reviewing permit documents for the City of Chicago Department of Buildings and other Illinois authorities having jurisdiction
  • Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD for plumbing design
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar project collaboration platforms
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu for markups and collaboration
  • Proficiency in pipe sizing and system calculation tools and Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with proven ability to lead client discussions and coordinate across disciplines
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Project experience across sectors such as residential, public sector, higher education, industrial, or mission critical

Nice To Haves

  • PE license in Illinois a plus
  • PE Licensure in Illinois and other states
  • Fire protection design experience, including sprinkler system layout and coordination, standpipes, fire pumps, and applicable NFPA standards
  • Ability to coordinate plumbing and fire protection systems together across complex building projects
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Permit experience outside Illinois, with knowledge of regional code variations and ability to adapt designs to local requirements
  • Experience with specialty plumbing systems such as compressed air, medical gas, lab piping, or industrial/process utility systems
  • Field experience with system installation, troubleshooting, or commissioning
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers

Responsibilities

  • Serve as plumbing lead from concept through construction closeout, owning plumbing scope, schedule, and deliverables with minimal oversight
  • Lead the full plumbing design scope on projects, including domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, specialty piping systems, and construction administration
  • Develop plumbing drawings and BIM models using Revit and AutoCAD and coordinate integration with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines
  • Review designs for compliance with the City of Chicago Building Code, Illinois Plumbing Code, Illinois Energy Conservation Code, IPC, and other applicable codes and standards
  • Prepare technical documentation and support permit submittals to the City of Chicago Department of Buildings and other authorities having jurisdiction
  • Interface directly with clients, architects, and contractors to present and defend plumbing design decisions
  • Lead plumbing coordination meetings and resolve cross discipline conflicts related to routing, equipment, utilities, and installation
  • Conduct field visits for site surveys, installation reviews, troubleshooting, and construction support
  • Support the design and coordination of plumbing systems serving a variety of project types, including commercial, residential, public sector, higher education, industrial, and mission critical facilities
  • Support budgeting, estimating, and proposal development for plumbing scopes, including writing technical content for pursuits
  • Develop and enforce plumbing design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for the team
  • Mentor junior staff and support the overall growth of the plumbing and MEP team
