Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalence
• Phlebotomy Certification required (within three months of hire date, before preferred)
• Issued by (Governing Body): AMT- American Medical Technologist, ASCP – American Society for Clinical Pathology, NCA - National Credentialing Agency, National Health Association (NHA), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
• 3 years of phlebotomy experience required
• CPR required

Nice To Haves

• Point of Care (CLIA Waived testing) experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Training, compliance, and competency for the collection of patient samples for adult and pediatric patients by vascular access (venipuncture) or capillary collection (finger stick) using aseptic protocols, accurate patient identification and proper labeling procedures.
• Routine visits of collection sites to ensure quality, compliance, and efficiency.
• Assisting with collection during peak volume times as well as determined by operational needs.
• Initiating investigation for issues and concerns that arise and reporting to the appropriate leadership, as well as being involved in any required education.
• First line of communication for Phlebotomy staff in day-to-day operations, including scheduling, Quality Assurance monitoring, and clinical staff support.
• Performing specimen centrifugation, processing, prepping for transportation, storage, and retrieval.
• Producing patient demographic sheets and preparing additional paperwork, labels, etc., to accompany specimens, as necessary.
• Demonstrating and explaining appropriate phlebotomy techniques and procedures to obtain cooperation and assistance for specimen collection.
• Employing sound decision-making and necessary judgment to assess adverse reactions such as dizziness or other distress and notifying the appropriate clinical staff.
• Preserving patient confidentiality and ensuring HIPAA compliance with all patient-related duties.
• Maintaining a clean patient/working environment while meeting the requirements of all OSHA and regulatory agencies with appropriate use and disposal of sharps, medical/biological waste.
• Performing CLIA waived and some CLIA moderate testing, as well as Bone Marrow collection assistance.
• Performing quality control, calibration, and maintenance of the instrumentation that they are trained on.
• Ensuring the accurate recording of test results to ensure quality reporting within the expected time frame.
• Communicating any questions, unusual findings, or observations to the Lab Manager or Supervisor.
• Working directly with physicians for observation and assistance in bone marrow specimen collection and preparation of samples for testing.
• Ensuring patients receive a quality professional phlebotomy service and a pleasant patient experience at all locations, in addition to phone interactions.
• Assisting in the development, assembly, and implementation of the annual phlebotomy skills and competency assessment for all of DuPage Medical Group.
• Participating in educational and training activities and may participate in the performance of routine administrative and non-routine technical functions within their scope.
• Interacting with patients professionally and courteously utilizing positive patient experience tools.
• Monitoring phone and voice mail messages, as necessary.
• Utilizing skills to accurately access patient/testing information and communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff.
• Appropriately maintaining inventory of supplies and materials within the department.
• RL6 investigation and support.
• Effectively reporting and investigating patient safety incidents, medical errors, and potential risks in the facility.
• Assisting with identification and implementation of corrective action where appropriate.
• Investigating issues such as turn-around-times with the lab, problems receiving supplies, patient issues and concerns, and forwarding these issues to the correct leadership.
• Local travel required 25-50% of the time based on operational needs within the Laboratory Services Department of DuPage Medical Group with limited notice.
