This role acts as a resource and provides day-to-day work direction to employees and students. The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for assigning, monitoring, and reviewing work progress and accuracy, managing productivity, maintaining staffing levels, and offering guidance on complex issues. This position also assists with human resource responsibilities, including interviewing, staff development, and resolving employee concerns. The Lead Phlebotomist interprets department policies, advises staff on procedural changes, and coordinates departmental workflow, including specimen collection, processing, and ordering. They handle telephone calls, assist with inventory, and investigate and resolve procedure or performance failures. Additionally, this role reviews pending and management reports, generates and distributes reports, and documents information for quality assurance. A key responsibility is verifying positive patient identification and performing venipuncture and other specimen collections from patients of all ages according to protocol, assessing patient reactions, and obtaining medical assistance when needed. They manage specimen collection based on priority and schedule, sort, package, and track specimens for transport, and ensure all collection functions are completed according to protocol. Proper specimen labeling and suitability for testing are critical. The Lead Phlebotomist resolves specimen identification and requisition problems, clarifies orders, accepts specimens from various customers, and responds to additional procurement requests. They may also perform limited testing under CLIA guidelines, run quality control checks, and instruct students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing. This role requires the ability to provide age-appropriate patient care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the life span and assessing patient status relative to age-specific needs.
