About The Position

The Paralegal Lead, under the direction of the Family Division Manager for Child Support and Paralegal Operations, provides paralegal support and serves as the lead worker for the Family Division Paralegal Unit. The position coordinates daily workflow, assigns and monitors tasks, and provides training, technical guidance, and quality assurance to paralegal staff. The incumbent ensures compliance with court policies, procedures, and the Maryland Rules regarding family law matters and assists management in identifying and implementing operational improvements. The position exercises considerable independent judgment and discretion in handling confidential information and resolving complex issues.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Social Sciences, Legal Studies, Business Administration, or Paralegal Studies, or a closely related field; plus three (3) years of relevant experience as a paralegal with at least (1) year of experience in a lead/supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for family court procedures and case processing.
  • Coordinates daily operations of the Paralegal Unit, ensuring timely and accurate case processing and service delivery.
  • Provides training, coaching, and technical assistance, and case documentation in compliance with Maryland Rules in family law matters.
  • Assigns, prioritizes, and monitors workloads to ensure timely processing.
  • Reviews staff work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with court policies and procedures, as well as the Maryland Rules.
  • Provides recommendations for operational improvements to management.
  • Implements and ensures compliance with local court policies, statewide directives, and applicable statutes.
  • Provides procedural information and support to litigants, attorneys, judicial officers, and the public.
  • Drafts orders and memorandums associated with such matters as Absolute Divorce, Custody, Visitation, Child Support, Adoption, Juvenile Guardianship, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Service (SIJS).
  • Conducts interviews to obtain information from parties and explains applicable legal procedures.
  • Exercises independent judgment and discretion in determining appropriate levels of confidentiality for records and case information.
  • Confers with the Manager for Child Support and Paralegal Operations regarding issues requiring legal determination.
  • Screens requests and directs matters appropriately.
  • Ensures emergency pleadings and documents are filed in accordance with Maryland Rules and Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
