About The Position

Under the direction of the Production Supervisor, the Lead Packer oversees Packers and temporary employees to ensure the quality and production of mailers across multiple production lines. This role is responsible for meeting customer specifications and delivery requirements, as well as company standards for quality performance and operation in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Lead Packer is also responsible for maintaining continuous product quality during production and guiding workflow by monitoring the packaging workforce's quality inspections and packaging process. They perform quality inspections at regularly prescribed intervals and document them across multiple production lines, and assist employees in the department to perform their duties correctly. Additionally, they help the converting team operate at or above designated run speeds.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent technical school preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a Manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally in English (Spanish bilingual preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills: ability to delegate, plan, and schedule accordingly.
  • Must be flexible with work scheduling as well as overtime.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand detailed written and/or oral instructions including basic mathematical skills.
  • Ability to read a ruler, scale, and micrometer.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on quality.
  • Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods; ability to bend, stoop, reach and lift up to 30 pounds and endure elevated temperature levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead team of Packers for multiple production lines by monitoring performance and providing direction.
  • Ensure SOPs are followed during production process.
  • Ensure correct packaging components are in place for each varying job order.
  • Responsible for maintaining integrity of SAP inventory management system and that finished good load flags are placed correctly.
  • Monitor jobs, including packaging, for defects and inaccuracies per TMS quality standards; correct and report any non-conformities and initiate hold procedure when needed.
  • Ensure Packer rotations and breaks per company policies.
  • Work with Production Supervisor to determine manning schedules and overtime allocations.
  • Accurately update the upcoming shift to ensure a smooth shift handoff; communicate regularly with staff to minimize delays.
  • Manage and maintain the timecards for temporary workers.
  • Perform and document hourly inspections and run profile retain samples per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Monitor mailer production, including packaging, for defects and inaccuracies per quality standards; correct and report any non-conformities and initiate hold procedure when needed.
  • Train Packers on Quality Assurance (QA) SOP; regularly conduct audits to ensure quality inspections are being performed.
  • Work with Packaging Coordinators and Operations to resolve issues per QA SOP.
  • Communicate effectively with upcoming shift to ensure smooth handoff; keep open dialogue with staff to minimize delays.
  • Perform 6S and SOP audits regularly as required.
  • Help to identify raw material defects, captures relevant information (lot codes, samples, etc.) and forward to Quality Manager.
