About The Position

The Lead Mobile Equipment Technician performs advanced maintenance and repair tasks for motor vehicles, tractors, trailers, generators, and small engines. This role requires a high level of expertise in conducting routine service duties, inspecting vehicle conditions for safety, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Technician Lead will mentor lower-level technicians, stay updated on technology, and attend training as necessary to maintain skills. Performs other duties as assigned to support the team. In this role, your day will involve a dynamic mix of shop and fieldwork. You will lead the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and vehicles, including backhoes and semis, as well as light equipment like small engines and cars. Much of your time will be spent diagnosing complex issues, overseeing repairs, and ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and safely. You will also collaborate with other technicians, mentor junior staff, and engage in ongoing training to stay current with industry advancements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field; extensive relevant experience may substitute if supplemented by recognized industry certifications.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
  • Class “A” commercial driver’s license.
  • Multiple ASE certifications (e.g., Master Technician status) or equivalent recognized credentials.
  • In-depth knowledge of all major automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, and specialized vehicle systems.
  • Seasoned diagnostic capabilities for complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic challenges.
  • Thorough understanding of fleet operations, scheduling, and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, EPA).
  • Ability to implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs and ensure readiness of all fleet vehicles.
  • Skilled at planning and prioritizing large-scale projects, shop workflows, and long-term equipment life-cycle strategies.
  • Expertise in resource allocation, parts ordering, and cost management to optimize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring a diverse team of mechanics and support staff.
  • Excellent communication skills for liaising with management, vendors, and external agencies.
  • Champion of safety culture, able to conduct regular audits, trainings, and corrective measures.
  • Maintains strict quality standards, ensuring all repairs and modifications meet or exceed OEM specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced maintenance and repair of all corporate vehicles and support equipment safely and on time.
  • Lead and assist other technicians with complex maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Refuel vehicles, maintain accurate, up-to-date logs, and operate the corporate refueling station efficiently.
  • Retrieve and deliver various materials, supplies, and automotive components as directed.
  • Conduct thorough vehicle inspections to evaluate roadworthiness and address defects in compliance with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues to ensure timely repairs and minimize downtime.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on vehicles and equipment.
  • Coordinate with vendors for parts and supplies and ensure inventory is maintained.
  • Develop and implement maintenance protocols to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Participate in safety audits and propose improvements to shop safety practices.
  • Stay current with technology and maintenance and repair practices.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops to ensure skill levels meet job requirements.
  • Participate in safety training and adhere to all safety protocols in shop and field environments.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Provide guidance on troubleshooting techniques and the use of shop equipment.
  • Evaluate junior technicians' progress and provide constructive feedback to support their development.
  • Serve as shop leadership in the absence of the Fleet Operations Supervisor, ensuring smooth operations and team coordination.
  • Assist the Fleet Operations Supervisor in administrative duties and team management as required.
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and responses as directed.
  • Participate in a minimum of two H.O.P.E. events totaling at least eight (8) hours annually.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Assist with additional tasks as needed by the team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain timely and accurate information in the vehicle data file.
