Lead, Mobile App Software Engineer

Whitepages, Inc.•Seattle, WA
•$175,000 - $250,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Whitepages is seeking an Engineering Lead to own its React Native mobile experience across iOS and Android. This hands-on leadership role sets technical direction, guides a small, high-trust team, owns mobile architecture, and partners with Product, Design, and Marketing to shape the roadmap. The role emphasizes directing and reviewing coding agents rather than primarily writing code, with sound judgment about delegation, intervention, and maintaining quality. The lead will establish how the team uses agentic and AI-assisted workflows in day-to-day engineering, including defining appropriate scopes of work and building safeguards such as tests, review gates, and CI checks. The role begins with a focus on mobile but is expected to expand across engineering areas, potentially including Web, backend services, and Data, as product needs and agent capabilities evolve. Whitepages is a team of approximately 50 people serving millions of users. The company is remote-first with a hybrid model: Seattle-based employees work from home four days a week and in the downtown office on Tuesdays, plus one designated in-office week each quarter. Employees based in Idaho, Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida, or Maryland work from home and travel to Seattle for one week each quarter. The position is open only to current residents of Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida, or Maryland. Compensation is a base salary of $175,000–$250,000, dependent on location and experience, plus eligibility for quarterly and annual company-performance bonuses.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 3 years leading or mentoring engineers.
  • At least 4 years of React Native experience, or a strong combination of React web and native or hybrid mobile development.
  • At least 5 years of JavaScript or TypeScript experience.
  • Proven ability to own architecture for a production mobile app used at meaningful scale.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools or agentic workflows in a real engineering workflow, with the ability to discuss their strengths, limitations, and appropriate trust boundaries.
  • Strong product sense and ability to ground build decisions in user impact.
  • Track record of working through ambiguity to deliver well-tested solutions with autonomy and ownership.
  • Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, and non-technical audiences.
  • Genuine interest in growing beyond mobile, including willingness to take on backend services or data-oriented work as the role expands.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building React Native libraries with native iOS or Android integration, or native development in Swift or Kotlin.
  • Experience designing or operating agentic systems in production, including the workflows or tooling around them.
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, UI automation frameworks, and release engineering.
  • Familiarity with customer data platforms and interpreting product analytics to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Experience on hybrid agile teams and comfort with informal project management, including scoping, estimation, and status reporting.
  • Prior exposure to backend services or data engineering or analytics work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small team of mobile engineers; set technical direction, review code and architecture decisions, and mentor engineers toward greater ownership and craft.
  • Own the architecture of React Native applications across iOS and Android, balancing shared code with platform-specific quality.
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Marketing to shape the roadmap and contribute product judgment.
  • Build, evaluate, and roll out agentic and AI-assisted engineering workflows, including coding agents, automated code review, test generation, and CI triage.
  • Champion testability, accessibility, and usability in every feature.
  • Own and evolve the mobile CI/CD pipeline, including automated UI testing and release processes.
  • Translate technical tradeoffs for non-technical stakeholders and communicate technical requirements to them.
  • Promote operational excellence by reducing technical debt, improving documentation, and maintaining a healthy sense of urgency.
  • Define and manage how coding agents are used day to day, including scoping delegated work and establishing tests, review gates, and CI checks to ensure quality.
  • Grow beyond mobile over time and flex into other engineering areas as product needs evolve.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary plus participation in quarterly and annual bonus programs tied to company performance.
  • Remote-first work arrangement with a hybrid model and periodic in-person collaboration.
