About The Position

The Lead Medical Technologist-Chemistry is responsible for performing high-complexity clinical chemistry testing while serving as a technical lead within the department. This role ensures accuracy, quality, and compliance across all laboratory processes while supporting staff training, instrument troubleshooting, method validation, quality control, and departmental oversight activities. The Lead Medical Technologist plays a key role in maintaining operational excellence, regulatory compliance, efficient workflow, and continuous improvement within the chemistry laboratory.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or a related field required.
MLS/MT or equivalent national certification required.
Florida Technologist License required.
4+ years of clinical laboratory experience required, preferably with significant experience in clinical chemistry.
Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in clinical chemistry and high-complexity laboratory operations.
Strong understanding of quality control, quality assurance, calibration, verification, and laboratory regulatory standards.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and evaluate laboratory data for accuracy, validity, and clinical consistency.
Proficient with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and general computer systems.
Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time-management skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with laboratory leadership and team members.

Nice To Haves

Experience with automated chemistry analyzers and related laboratory instrumentation preferred; training may be provided on Access-specific instrumentation.
Experience supporting method validation, instrument correlation, linearity, precision, accuracy, and QC evaluation highly preferred.
Strong leadership skills with demonstrated experience training, mentoring, or providing technical guidance to laboratory staff.

Responsibilities

Operate and maintain automated chemistry analyzers and other laboratory instrumentation used for high-complexity clinical chemistry testing.
Perform routine and complex testing on patient specimens in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
Load and replenish reagents, controls, calibrators, and consumables as needed to support uninterrupted laboratory operations.
Perform routine instrument calibration, verification, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and quality control procedures with complete and accurate documentation.
Monitor instrument performance and identify, investigate, and resolve technical issues that may impact test accuracy or turnaround times.
Ensure proper specimen receipt, identification, labeling, integrity, preparation, and handling prior to testing.
Maintain appropriate reagent and consumable inventory levels and monitor expiration dates, lot numbers, and storage requirements.
Review and evaluate test results for accuracy, validity, and consistency prior to release into the laboratory information system, identifying questionable, inconclusive, or invalid results for further investigation.
Perform appropriate result review, dilution, repeat testing, and reflex testing in accordance with established SOPs.
Ensure timely completion of testing workflows, including STAT and priority specimens, in alignment with established turnaround times.
Accurately enter, verify, and manage test results within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Prepare reagents, solutions, and materials while following appropriate dilution, storage, and handling procedures.
Operate micropipettes and automated pipetting systems while maintaining specimen integrity and preventing cross-contamination.
Follow established procedures for specimen processing, aliquoting, and storage.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), biohazard handling, chemical safety, and bloodborne pathogen precautions.
Follow all laboratory regulations, SOPs, quality standards, and HIPAA requirements related to patient confidentiality and laboratory operations.
Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff and leadership to maintain workflow efficiency, productivity, and a positive working environment.
Serve as a technical resource for Medical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and other laboratory staff within the chemistry department.
Assist the supervisor with training new staff and oversee technical training progress, including competency assessment and sign-off.
Provide ongoing technical guidance and mentorship to department team members.
Assist with evaluation and implementation of new methods, including linearity, precision, accuracy, instrument correlation, reference range verification, and other required assessments.
Support quality control program management, including evaluation of new QC material lots, comparison studies, trending, and documentation.
Monitor QC data and assist with identifying trends, shifts, or deviations requiring corrective action.
Assist with proficiency testing and other regulatory or quality assurance activities as assigned.
Provide technical support for departmental maintenance, regulatory documentation, inspections, and monthly compliance reporting for supervisor review.
Identify opportunities to improve laboratory processes, efficiency, quality, and turnaround times.
Escalate significant technical, quality, or operational concerns to the appropriate laboratory leadership.
