About The Position

S&B is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Specialist responsible for independently performing Mechanical Design activities for all phases of general equipment designs for projects of moderate size and complexity. This role requires full competence in performing all conventional aspects of Mechanical Design and applying independent judgment for the evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard design methods and procedures. Responsibilities include generating scope estimate packages, priced equipment lists, work-hour estimates/staffing plans, project schedule details for mechanical engineering scope deliverables, and periodic progress reporting against project schedules and budgets. Assignments will have clear objectives and may involve investigating a limited number of variables. The position may involve periodic evaluation by a hub department manager or director of mechanical engineering and requires participation in performance reviews of engineering staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET accredited program.
  • Five to seven (5 – 7) years’ experience in mechanical design or related functional area.
  • Considerable experience in utilizing various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment.
  • Proficient in engineering and design tools, including common computer aided drafting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering Codes and standards (i.e. ASME BPVC and various API recommended practices for fixed / rotating equipment).
  • Experienced with equipment engineering activities for either fixed or rotating equipment.
  • Understanding how engineering deliverables fit into a project schedule and impacts to preceding and following activities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal or written formats) with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Comfortable at providing direct tasking to other technical staff regarding technical and schedule topics.
  • Ability to interface with other discipline leads, project managers and clients on a daily / weekly basis.
  • Capable of presenting technical and non-technical data to peers, stakeholders, clients and design review teams.
  • Skilled at interpreting and applying technical and non-technical data, including charts, graphs, design codes and engineering theories.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before clients or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of NCEES FE Examination.
  • Actively working toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) License.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Mechanical Design activities for general equipment designs.

  • Gather data to help prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions.
  • Evaluate vendors' bids and drawings.
  • Participate in the preparation of equipment lists and specialty item lists.
  • Participate in the review of design guides and specifications.
  • Prepare equipment data sheets.
  • Develop priced equipment lists for estimates.
  • Prepare work-hour estimates for project scopes and engineering deliverables/activities.
  • Participate in preparation of project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks/deliverables.
  • Progress completion of mechanical engineering tasking against the project schedule.
  • Develop staffing plans for managing the project scope.
  • Direct engineering staff to complete activities and monitor progress.
  • Interpret engineering Codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API for simple rotating equipment).
  • Apply knowledge of welding procedures, materials selection, and nondestructive examination.
