About The Position

Performs maintenance and repairs on automotive, industrial equipment, diesel powered equipment, small gas engines, alternative fuel vehicles and equipment, electric and gasoline powered golf cart type vehicles. Provides general maintenance, diagnosis and repair of all university vehicles and equipment. Performs diagnosis and repair service of all aspects of modern vehicles, including computer-controlled systems. Provides service (lubrication, oil change, water and anti-freeze, windshield fluids, belts and hose inspections and replacements, air pressure and tire checks) on automotive vehicles and industrial equipment. Available to help with a facilities emergency. A pre-arranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather.

Requirements

  • General education or vocational training and 6+ years’ relevant experience.
  • Responsible for obtaining and maintaining all licenses required for code compliance and special tool operations.
  • Experience in automotive mechanic trade, including the use of tools, and diagnostic instruments including scan tool, digital volt/ohm meter, multi trace oscilloscope and other automotive repair equipment.
  • Must possess a current EPA section 609 refrigerant license.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and be able to operate a typical motor vehicle.
  • Ability to work with tools of the trade with demonstrated competence.
  • Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade.
  • Reads, understands manuals and instructions printed in English and documents legibly in same.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to competently use and operate a personal computer or laptop computer with Windows operating system.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Work, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to work safely and be protected in areas with fumes or airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals.
  • Ability to work in and around moving mechanical parts of equipment.
  • Must be able to read and follow instructions, schematics, drawings, and repair manuals.
  • Knowledgeable of ignition systems, fuel injection systems, brake systems, wheel alignments, steering and suspension systems, vehicle electronic and computer systems, vehicle network systems.
  • Knowledge to repair heavy equipment such as loaders, back hoes, as well as small equipment such as landscape maintenance equipment
  • Knowledgeable in diagnosis and repair of mobile refrigeration systems to include recovery, recycling, charging, leak and performance testing.
  • Knowledge of use and disposal of chemicals common to trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the work area, and the environment.
  • Knowledge of alternative fuel and electric vehicles.
  • Ability to attend seminars, etc. to upgrade skills and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry 200 feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and carry up/down 30 stairs.
  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across the campus.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use and reach with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Pass PFT (pulmonary function test.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified EV Technicians Certificate training preferred.
  • Experience with standby generators.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems.
  • Extensive diagnostic and repair experience with at least one of the three domestic vehicle manufacturers (GM, Ford, Dodge) vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnostics and repairs on air R-134 and YF1234 conditioning systems to include recovery, recycling, charging, leaks detecting, and performance testing.
  • Performs tune-ups and engine repairs.
  • Performs body repairs and painting as required.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on university vehicles and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs diagnosis, service and repair of engines, transmissions, differentials, and all other aspects of vehicle or equipment repairs.
  • Performs welding and fabrication as required.
  • Inspect job repairs and determines what parts are supplies are needed and what methods to use for repairs per OEM repair procedures.
  • Studies repair manuals and schematics, etc. to ensure proper manufacturer repair procedures and processes are followed.
  • Assists with on-site fuel management system and associated fuel tanks and pumps.
  • Performs testing and bench overhaul starting, charging, and various electronically controlled systems; familiarity with wire repair, electrical schematic reading and diagnosis of power train controls of recent model vehicles.
  • Coordinates, oversees, and is primarily responsible for assuming responsibilities of supervisor in his absence.
  • Observes, communicates, complies with and enforces Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provisions; analyzes supplies and materials used in the performance and training of operational duties.
  • Perform duties and comply with needs of special events, before, during, and after the special events are completed.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO Community, as well as outside vendors.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary to support the UCO mission.
