About The Position

The Lead Mechanic performs a variety of duties in the trailer, tractor, and express areas of the shop. This role involves completing preventive maintenance, annual inspections, and minor repairs on various components such as door seals, hardware, electrical systems, brakes, mud flaps, Qualcomm systems, blower motors, and body work. The Lead Mechanic is responsible for reading and understanding work orders, performing inspections outdoors, and conducting express-related services like tire changes and safety inspections. A key part of the role is utilizing computer systems to manage work orders, track time and parts, and locate technical information. The Lead Mechanic also estimates repair needs, communicates with internal customers, and assists Senior Mechanics with specific repairs. This position requires a strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to become a certified brake and annual vehicle inspector, and proficiency in English communication.

Requirements

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be able to certify as a brake inspector.
  • 5+ years prior work experience as a Tractor Technician, Lead Technician, or similar job function.
  • Technical reading aptitude (e.g., electronic service bulletins; auto repair manuals).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication, and teambuilding skills.
  • Basic welding skills.
  • Ability to provide own basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and written, and have the ability to read and understand English.

  • Skill with windows based computer systems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMs), annual inspections, and minor repairs on trailers, tractors, and in express areas.
  • Repairs door seals, hardware, minor electrical components, brakes, mud flaps, routine Qualcomm issues, blower motors, and performs minor body work.
  • Reads and understands paper or electronic work orders to document and close completed tasks.
  • Works outdoors at Inspection Island or similar areas to perform safety and other related inspections and write-ups.
  • Performs express-related services including tire changing, minor brake, electrical, and safety-related inspections and work.
  • Utilizes computer systems (TMT /TMW and internet) to create, track, and complete work order repairs, including labor hours and parts used.
  • Estimates required repairs or directs the estimation process to a qualified Mechanic.
  • Communicates with internal customers regarding repair stances, wait times, repair decisions, and status updates.
  • Assists Senior Mechanic(s) on tractor and trailer repairs that do not require diagnosis.
  • Inspects components such as tie rod ends, king pins, wheel bearings, hood adjustments, and air ride height.
