About The Position

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a Lead Mechanic Supervisor - Sheet Metal to support shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA. This position will assist management in training and assigning semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel based on their abilities, experience, and job knowledge to meet production goals in ship repair and industrial fabrication. The role involves executing production duties, performing skilled tasks in maintenance, repair, installation/removal, and new construction, and ensuring teams have the necessary tools and procedures for safe and efficient work. The supervisor will also support management with timekeeping, training, performance management, coaching, and supervision. They will break down production requirements into actionable plans, monitor job sites, make recommendations for the Plan of the Day (POD), and evaluate job sites for safety and efficiency. A key aspect is understanding and complying with all technical job aspects, including contract requirements, drawings, and procedures. The role also includes reviewing project specifications, supporting material requisitions, generating production reports, managing tools and resources, initiating QA/Customer call-outs, attending TIP inspections, serving as backup supervisor, and providing input for schedule and progress updates.

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelors or Registered Apprentice (grad) or HS and at least 7 years related trade experience (in the trade to be supervised).
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Must be able to enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
  • Must have working knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in Sheet Metal, Joinery, and HVAC.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
  • Must be able to access Government facilities and be DBIDS eligible.
  • Position requires US Citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Execute routine and non-routine production duties in support of operational goals and in compliance with Company procedures and policies.
  • Perform skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, installation/removal, new construction, etc. activities supporting ship repair/industrial fabrication operations.
  • Support management to facilitate daily production activities of the team and ensure employees have all necessary tools, equipment, work procedures, etc., to work safely and efficiently.
  • Assist management with timekeeping validation, training, performance management, coaching/counselling, and supervision for employees assigned to their work crews.
  • Break down broader production requirements into practical action plans to support safety, quality, cost, and schedule goals while providing constant monitoring of job sites.
  • Make recommendations to support Plan of the Day (POD) for assigned projects and utilize assigned resources to efficiently achieve operational requirements.
  • Evaluate job sites and work environments prior to work starting to ensure safe project set ups and efficient work evolutions.
  • Understand and comply with all technical aspects of the job, including adherence to all contract requirements, drawings, procedures/work instructions.
  • Review project specifications/SOWs and support creation of requisitions for all needed materials.
  • Generate and submit production reports to management, meeting all technical/customer reporting requirements.
  • Support management in ensuring tools/resources are mobilized and demobilized from project appropriately, providing updates on damaged or lost equipment.
  • Initiate QA/Customer call out and attend/execute TIP inspections.
  • Serve as backup/makeup to supervisor, as needed.
  • Provide input to management and project teams to support schedule, progress, ETC/EAC updates for all projects assigned to them.
