About The Position

The Lead Lifeguard, reporting to the Health Club Manager of the Health Club & Spa, oversees daily aquatic operations and staff at Williamsburg Landing's Health Club, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for residents, members, and guests. This role combines active pool supervision and water chemistry management with team leadership, including training staff, and monitoring policy compliance. Serving as an ambassador for aquatic activity, the Lead Lifeguard provides personalized member orientations, assists individuals with special needs, and promotes pool programs across the community.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, required
  • Minimum 1–2 years of lifeguarding experience required
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent), required
  • Current CPR / AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Certification, required

Nice To Haves

  • experience in a CCRC, senior living, recreational, or therapeutic aquatic setting strongly preferred
  • Previous supervisory, team lead, or staff training experience, preferred
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) designation strongly preferred, or the ability and willingness to obtain CPO certification within 6 months of hire
  • General knowledge of physical limitations of older adults is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day aquatic operations by assigning duties and coordinating lap lane availability
  • Oversee lifeguarding staff to ensure quality work, adherence to deadlines, and compliance with Williamsburg Landing and department policies, procedures, and safety standards
  • Conduct onboarding and ongoing departmental (in-service) training for lifeguards, demonstrating correct lifeguarding and rescue techniques
  • Deliver timely operational updates to staff and maintain clear communication with the Health Club Manager regarding incomplete daily tasks or operational roadblocks.
  • Partner with the Health Club Manager by providing input for staff schedules, performance evaluations, as well as recommendations for team member recognition or corrective action
  • Ensure patron safety through active, continuous visual surveillance of the aquatic facility, enforcing all posted rules, policies, and incident reporting procedures
  • Conduct daily testing and accurate logging of chemical levels (pH, chlorine), water temperatures, and water levels for all pools and hot tubs; report pump room or equipment anomalies immediately to the Health Club Manager
  • Inspect, maintain, and ensure the availability of required safety and aquatic supplies and equipment; report necessary repairs or safety hazards
  • Maintain a clean, safe aquatic environment by executing daily task checklists, inspecting equipment, and performing routine cleaning of the pool deck and locker rooms during downtime
  • Conduct personalized pool orientations, introduce aquatic-specific exercise equipment and techniques, and educate members on appropriate aquatic safety protocols
  • Provide tailored, one-on-one assistance to residents and members with special needs or mobility limitations upon request
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for member inquiries, feedback, and conflict resolution, escalating complex issues and safety concerns to the Health Club Manager
  • Build strong rapport with residents, health club members, and prospective members, maintaining an accessible, welcoming presence
  • Deliver educational presentations and promotional sessions to residents, staff, and prospective members to drive participation in aquatic programs
  • Evaluate current aquatic work processes and suggest methods for continuous service and safety improvements.
  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory team meetings, professional development courses, and required trainings mandated by Williamsburg Landing or regulatory/accrediting bodies.
  • Uphold all Williamsburg Landing standards, policies, and procedures regarding conduct, dress code, safety, and attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
