About The Position

Under general supervision, this role directs and participates in the planting and maintenance for an assigned section. The position involves supervising unskilled and semi-skilled personnel and performing related work as required. Work involves regular contact with other employees and residents.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience in gardening, including some work with sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of work hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
  • Knowledge of design, planting, and maintenance practices and procedures for grounds and parkway systems.
  • Knowledge of field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina.
  • Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
  • Ability to communicate when necessary with others in English and Spanish.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the assignment.
  • Skill in driving trucks and passenger vehicles.
  • Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver's License, Class B.
  • Ability to talk, hear, use hands to finger and grasp, kneel, pull, push, stoop, balance, climb, crouch.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to walk for periods of up to 6 hours.
  • Ability to occasionally work on ladders up to 8 feet.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Reading, problem solving, training, verbal and written communication, customer contact.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates daily assignments and supervises planting, cultivating, fertilizing, and watering of lawns and shrubs in a designated section.
  • Performs minor maintenance of sprinkler systems.
  • Inspects completed work and work in progress.
  • Enforces safety procedures and policies.
  • Supervises and participates in operating riding mowers, gas trimmers, vacuums, sod cutters, hand-held spray equipment, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Follows up on written resident complaint requests, corrects problems, discusses with residents, or refers complex requests to a supervisor.
  • Maintains written records.
  • May be required to drive a crew carrier from the Service Center to the assigned work area.
