About The Position

WSP's Resources subsector, part of the Energy, Resources & Industry business line, supports mining and heavy industrial clients across Canada. This role is an opportunity to shape high-impact infrastructure, drive innovation in automation and process control, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams delivering transformative outcomes across Canada and globally. Based in one of our Ontario offices (ideally in Northern Ontario, Greater Toronto Area, or Saskatoon), the Lead I&C Engineer will serve as a senior subject matter expert in instrumentation and controls engineering for both new construction and brownfield mining, metals, and other heavy industrial projects, influencing project outcomes from concept through completion. The work will help clients operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Requirements

  • At least 18+ years of electrical engineering design experience supporting heavy industrial facilities.
  • Degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility in Canada.
  • Extensive experience leading and delivering instrumentation and controls engineering within mining or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Strong expertise in PLC, DCS, SCADA systems, and process automation platforms.
  • Proven ability to develop control narratives, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and I/O lists.
  • Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational support in industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of safety systems, hazardous area classification, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Ability to lead complex projects and mentor junior staff while maintaining high technical excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and act as the senior technical subject matter expert on the delivery of instrumentation and control systems for mining and heavy industrial facilities.
  • Oversee control philosophy, system architecture, and functional specifications for complex process systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to ensure fully integrated project solutions.
  • Drive innovation by applying advanced automation, digitalization, and control technologies.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and quality reviews for project teams.
  • Support project execution through all phases—from concept to commissioning and operational optimization.
  • Engage with clients to understand operational needs and deliver tailored, high-value engineering solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards across all deliverables.
