About The Position

The Lead Incident Investigator is responsible for conducting thorough investigations of safety, health, and environmental incidents across the project. This role ensures compliance with Bechtel standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices, while promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement. In addition, the role requires support of ESH activities to support the implementation of the project’s ESH program and management systems.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science-related discipline from an accredited university or college with 4 or more years of experience related to safety or occupational health; or an Associate’s degree (or equivalent) in one of the same disciplines with 6 or more years of relevant experience; or 8 or more years of relevant safety or health experience.
  • At least 4 years of dedicated experience conducting or leading teams through root cause analysis investigations using common investigative tools, such as Fishbone Diagram, Pareto Charts, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, or Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Ability to conduct field audits and program assessments and intervene with craft and supervisors for correction.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills to prepare presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in root cause analysis or incident investigation.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 Management System standards.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
  • Knowledge and experience with environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead formal investigations for safety, health, and environmental incidents.
  • Gather facts through interviews, site inspections, and evidence collection.
  • Perform root cause analysis and develop corrective actions.
  • Prepare detailed investigation reports including witness statements, photos, and causal analysis.
  • Prepare findings for review at the Incident Review Board within required timelines.
  • Supervise assigned investigator(s) to ensure consistent, quality investigations and reports performed by others.
  • Ensure adherence to Bechtel ESH standards and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in SharePoint and project document management system.
  • Track corrective actions and verify implementation.
  • Support hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Recommend preventive measures based on investigation trends.
  • Deliver investigation process training to project teams.
  • Promote lessons learned and safety culture initiatives.
  • Develop ESH related communication through publications, flyers, posters, signs, banners, and other communication media.
  • Support ESH team members and tasks associated with all three ESH disciplines.
