About The Position

Our maintenance team plays a critical role in keeping our heavy equipment operating safely and efficiently. We are seeking an experienced Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Apex, NC. The Lead Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on Liberty Waste Solutions' fleet of heavy equipment used in landfill, transfer station, recycling, and material processing operations. This position serves as the technical leader within the maintenance department by providing advanced diagnostic support, mentoring technicians, and ensuring maximum equipment reliability and uptime.

Requirements

  • Minimum four (4) years of heavy equipment repair experience required.
  • Strong hydraulic, electrical, and diesel diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical documents.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must provide basic hand tools.
  • Proficient with Windows-based computer systems and electronic diagnostic software.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Technical school or Heavy Equipment Technology certification preferred.
  • Previous leadership or mentoring experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel-powered heavy equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and major component repairs on wheel loaders, excavators, dozers, compactors, grinders, crushers, screeners, water trucks, and other heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, fuel, cooling, and electronic control systems.
  • Utilize OEM diagnostic software and electronic tools to identify equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform both scheduled shop repairs and field service repairs at Liberty Waste Solutions facilities.
  • Inspect equipment for safety, operational reliability, and compliance with company maintenance standards.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, and equipment modifications as required.
  • Complete work orders accurately and maintain detailed maintenance records.
  • Coordinate repairs to minimize equipment downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Assist in maintaining shop organization, inventory, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Mentor and coach technicians by providing technical guidance and sharing best maintenance practices.
  • Work closely with Operations and Maintenance Management to prioritize repairs and improve equipment availability.
  • Follow all Liberty Waste Solutions safety policies along with OSHA and environmental regulations.
  • Participate in emergency equipment repairs when operational needs are required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
