About The Position

This is a dual position consisting of two separate job descriptions/positions, each with its separate wage grades. The first position is Facility Operator, reporting to the Supervisor, Arena Operations. This role assists in the maintenance and security of community facilities, taking direction from the Senior Facility Operator and directing part-time facility support staff. This position may require work in multiple community facilities. The second position is Lead Hand Truck Driver Parks, reporting to the District Supervisors within the Parks & Cemeteries Section of the Environmental Services Division. This role directs, schedules, and works with a crew to maintain City parks, roads, and sports field infrastructure according to prescribed standards. It involves transporting crew, materials, and equipment, providing direction and training to staff, completing reports, preparing cost estimates, and liaising with user groups and contractors.

Requirements

  • Completion of a grade 12 diploma is preferred.
  • Must possess Basic Refrigeration Certificate.
  • Must have experience working as an Assistant Operator or equivalent/related experience.
  • Working experience using and operating equipment such as ice resurfacer, ice cutter and other ice maintenance equipment is required.
  • Previous experience directing and working with staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including W.H.M.I.S. legislation.
  • Previous experience performing preventative maintenance.
  • Must be able to understand and follow detailed procedures in performing trade or craft type work.
  • Must be able to use fractions and decimal arithmetic and simple formulas, diagrams and drawings.
  • Must be available to work shifts.
  • Must possess a Class “G” Driver’s Licence valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain same.
  • Must possess and maintain current certification in “Standard” First Aid with CPR Level “C”.
  • Computer skills required in Peoplesoft and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Must be able to lift 30lbs.
  • Previous maintenance experience using tools and equipment related to duties listed above.
  • Previous experience directing, coaching and mentoring subordinate staff and working with crews to foster a positive working environment.
  • Previous progressive experience in parks maintenance and related programs or parks/horticulture training or education.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to operate trucks such as crew cabs, stake and dump trucks in a safe manner.
  • Ability to operate Parks related tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Must possess a valid Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence.
  • Able to understand and follow detailed procedures in performing trade or craft type work.
  • Able to use fractions and decimal arithmetic and simple formulas, diagrams and drawings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certificates of the Certified Ice Technician (C.I.T.) Courses offered through ORFA would be an asset.
  • Possession of a Refrigeration Operator "B" Class Ministry Certificate would be considered an asset.
  • Certified Parks Technologist (CPT designation) would be an asset.
  • Landscape Exterminator License would be considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge and skill with computers in a Window environment utilizing Microsoft Office would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Install and remove ice, perform ice cutting duties, and maintain ice quality.
  • Operate and maintain ice re-surfacer, ice cutter, and other ice maintenance equipment.
  • Respond to public inquiries and maintain facility security.
  • Clean facilities, remove snow and ice from entrances and walkways, and mark/paint ice.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on ice equipment and minor building maintenance.
  • Direct part-time staff and assist tradespersons.
  • Perform minor grounds maintenance, including grass cutting.
  • Administer First Aid when required.
  • Direct, schedule, and work with a crew to maintain City parks, sports fields, and trails.
  • Transport crew, materials, and equipment to job sites.
  • Provide direction, coaching, mentoring, and training to subordinate staff.
  • Complete inspection and maintenance reports and logs, and make budget recommendations.
  • Prepare cost estimates for repairs and/or replacement of Parks assets.
  • Read and interpret landscape and construction blueprints.
  • Oversee contractors and liaise with user groups, departments, and contractors.
  • Drive equipment such as crew cabs, stake trucks, dump trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • Connect/disconnect and tow equipment trailers and various implements.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment for parks maintenance.
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation systems.
  • Clear litter and debris, and plant and maintain grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Build, install, and repair wooden and frost fences, picnic tables, benches, and signage.
  • Repair and maintain outdoor structures and small equipment.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles, parts, and equipment; load and unload equipment.
  • Cut and chalk lines on sports fields.
  • Remove snow from pathways, sidewalks, and stairs.
  • Mix and dispense fuels, and take fuel readings and inventory.
  • Perform irrigation repairs and minor maintenance/repairs to buildings and stands.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Receive calls, take messages, and open, close, and clean various facilities.
  • Ensure assigned employees are provided with and instructed on the use of appropriate equipment, materials, and procedures.
  • Ensure all employees perform work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and adhere to City policies.
  • Report infractions and recommend appropriate action for non-compliant employees.
