About The Position

The Lead Hand Carpenter is a senior, hands-on carpentry role that bridges the gap between the crew members and the Foreperson. This position supports daily site operations by leading crews, coordinating maintaining quality standards, and assisting with problem-solving—while remaining actively involved in construction work. The Lead Hand Carpenter works closely with the Foreperson/Superintendent to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification. This role is well suited for an experienced carpenter seeking to demonstrate or develop leadership skills and lead by example. The Lead Hand Carpenter mentors crew members and is responsible for quality, productivity and safety within their assigned scopes of work, under the oversight of the Foreperson.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or carpentry training.
  • 3–5 years of carpentry experience with a portfolio of completed projects.
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and carpentry machinery.
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry techniques, materials, and construction drawings.
  • Understanding of building performance, envelope, and energy efficiency.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina, coordination, and ability to follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a day-to-day point of contact for assigned crew members.
  • Assist the Foreperson/Superintendent with daily task planning and work sequencing.
  • Lead by example through strong work ethic, professionalism, and craftsmanship.
  • Mentor crew members, supporting skill development and safe work practices.
  • Identify issues on site and proactively communicate solutions to leadership.
  • Perform hands-on carpentry work including framing, finishing, and installation.
  • Install prefabricated wall panels, floors, roofs, and structural systems per drawings.
  • Complete layout, measuring, cutting, and assembly of materials.
  • Install doors, windows, trim, stairs, joists, trusses, and rafters.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications accurately.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality, and workmanship.
  • Support coordination of materials, tools, and equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor workmanship to ensure compliance with drawings, codes, and company standards.
  • Assist with tracking progress and identifying potential schedule impacts.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
  • Model and enforce safe work practices on site.
  • Participate in and support toolbox talks and hazard identification.
  • Ensure PPE is worn and tools/equipment are used safely.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and respectful job site environment.
