About The Position

Provide leadership and expertise to personnel engaged in repairing and maintaining the Company’s fleet including ready mix and haul trucks. This role involves managing maintenance staff, ensuring proper training and certifications, and establishing preventative and predictive maintenance standards to minimize downtime. The Lead Fleet Mechanic will coordinate with operations and maintenance clerks, perform and oversee repairs on all vehicles and trucks, and communicate effectively with drivers regarding repair status. Responsibilities also include performing various maintenance operations, inspecting vehicles, diagnosing faults using diagnostic equipment, and managing work orders, parts supply, and warranty claims. The role requires strong computer skills for diagnostics and record-keeping, excellent communication and analytical skills, and the ability to act as a liaison between management and operational staff.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Candidate must be drug free.
  • Position requires moderately strenuous physical work.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds from floor to 3’ – 5’ occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Must be able to climb up and down ladders occasionally.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to examine, assemble, repair, and perform maintenance on aggregate or ready-mix equipment.
  • Must be able to travel safely while walking and operating trucks over uneven terrain, roads, and pavement.
  • Must be able to see, hear, and respond to verbal, visual, and written instructions and to moving heavy construction machinery.
  • Must be able to wear proper protective equipment including hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility clothing, steel-toed boots, and gloves.
  • Must be able to observe all company Safety policies on company premises and while operating heavy construction machinery.
  • Must be able to continually work in extreme hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work safely in wet, muddy, and slippery conditions occasionally.
  • Computer skills to perform computer diagnostics and to maintain service repair and maintenance records.
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and verbal.
  • Able to work in a positive, cooperative manner with staff and effectively act as a liaison between company management and area maintenance and operations staff in order to coordinate shop and plant projects.
  • Analytical skills to identify and solve mechanical problems.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 – 10 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Training from an accredited technical school preferred.
  • A minimum of 4 technical certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit a strong work ethic with the ability to take direction and work in a team setting and independently.
  • Adhere to Permian Basin Materials Code of Conduct and company policies.
  • Comply with all Safety, Health, Environmental and other Company policies and procedures.
  • Prioritize the work to be completed and make assignments to the maintenance staff.
  • Ensure personnel are qualified and well trained – identify training needs and ensure staff have required certifications.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor standards in preventative maintenance (PM) to minimize down time.
  • Implement predictive maintenance to determine the optimum life cycle for component replacements before breakdown occurs.
  • Coordinate with Operations to set priorities and schedule the work to be completed. Coordinate with the Maintenance Clerk for work orders and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Provide maintenance and repair on all vehicles and trucks in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with drivers to gather or verify information and to advise of expected repair time.
  • Perform all maintenance operations (welding, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, hydraulics, and air systems) in accordance with technical specifications and safety regulations.
  • Periodically inspect vehicles/trucks in accordance with the company’s Prescribed Inspection Schedule and complete equipment inspection and reports.
  • Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufactures specifications.
  • Operate and inspect vehicles/trucks in order to diagnose defects and maintain compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
  • Dismantle and reassemble vehicles and trucks using hoists and hand tools.
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Create work orders, parts supply, and purchase orders. Ensure quality parts and components are readily available. Consolidate purchases and develop national programs with suppliers to leverage pricing.
  • Track warranty repairs that are complete and submitted for reimbursement.
  • Contract for repair services not performed by maintenance personnel.
  • Such other duties as may be assigned.
