Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue. They are responsible for checking them in, verifying weapons and credentials, conducting training, and overseeing the course of fire at the gun range. LFIs are responsible for ensuring the safety of all personnel on the range and securing Sensitive Security Information (SSI) and Sensitive Personally Identifying Information (SPII) during and after requalification sessions. The LFI acts as the on-site training manager for the program, conducting all classroom instruction, delivering approved TSA training and safety briefs, introducing and describing new equipment, and ensuring all students understand and sign the safety briefing. They must ensure a minimum number of Support Firearms Instructors (SFIs) are present to maintain an instructor/student ratio of 1:6 for each training session and ensure a sufficient inventory of training supplies is on-hand. The LFI is expected to maintain positive control of the training environment from student arrival to departure, verify weapons and credentials by visual inspection, and ensure proper scoring of targets, completion of administrative forms, and collection of training data. LFIs are required to sign and certify qualification scores. If an FFDO fails to qualify, the LFI takes custody of their unloaded weapon, transport device, credential, and other equipment for return to TSA/FAMS, or makes arrangements for return if an authorized FAMS representative is not present. LFIs must keep all SSI and SPII secured appropriately in compliance with TSA policies and oversee timekeeping of SFI labor hours. They must also comply with internal compliance training events.
