Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) serve as the primary point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers (FFDO) upon their arrival at the training venue. They are responsible for checking in FFDOs, verifying weapons and credentials, conducting comprehensive training, and overseeing the course of fire at the gun-range. LFIs are the on-site training managers for the program, delivering approved TSA training and safety briefs, introducing new equipment, and ensuring all students understand and sign the safety briefing. A key aspect of their role is ensuring the safety of all personnel on the range and maintaining appropriate instructor/student ratios (1:6). They also manage training supplies, maintain positive control of the training environment, ensure proper scoring, complete administrative forms, collect training data, and certify qualification scores. In cases of FFDO failure to qualify, LFIs are responsible for taking custody of weapons, transport devices, credentials, and other equipment for return to TSA/FAMS, making immediate verbal notification to the FFDO Program Office if a FAMS representative is not present. Furthermore, LFIs must secure all Sensitive Security Information (SSI) and Sensitive Personally Identifying Information (SPII) in compliance with TSA policies and oversee the timekeeping of all SFI labor hours, ensuring compliance with internal training events.
