About The Position

The Lead Engineer is a specialist-level engineering role responsible for leading the development of Production and Controls (P&C) Production Standards for transmission substation protection applications. The position is part of the Production Standards group at Duke Energy Carolinas headquarters in downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. The role emphasizes relay settings standards, protection philosophy, settings templates, calculation guidance, and standard approaches. Standards may include specifications, design guides, relay settings templates, calculation tools, protection application guidance, template drawings, CAD blocks, item numbers, compatible units, and multilevel compatible units. The Lead Engineer solves complex problems, manages work, and provides engineering leadership and guidance to others with minimal supervision and increased latitude for unreviewed work. This position works with P&C Settings, P&C Design, other engineering teams, and Relay C&M teams to support consistent and efficient project execution. P&C Design experience is beneficial, particularly at the interface of settings standards with panel design, wiring, drawings, equipment application, and substation project execution. The role is based in a hybrid work environment, with work performed remotely and onsite after onboarding. Employees must live within a reasonable commute (no more than 50 miles one way) of the designated Duke Energy facility and have reliable transportation. The position is mostly office-based, with some field-site and factory visits, and requires 5–15% travel. Relocation assistance is not provided. The role requires a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree, and Professional Engineer registration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering may be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
  • Professional Engineer registration is required.
  • Eight years of related engineering work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, or applying transmission relay settings for line, transformer, bus, breaker failure, capacitor/reactor, and other substation protection schemes.
  • Experience performing or interpreting protection coordination studies, short-circuit studies, relay logic documentation, settings calculations, and settings change evaluations.
  • Understanding of NERC Compliance Standards, including PRC-001, PRC-006, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, and PRC-027.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relaying, relay protection schemes, and relay logic.
  • Ability to interpret and use applicable design codes, including NEC and NESC.
  • Ability to interpret and use schematics, wiring diagrams, elementaries, and other drawings.
  • Knowledge of transmission/transmission and transmission/distribution substation operations and protection and control schemes.
  • Demonstrated experience using project execution tools such as Maximo, TIM, Fusion, or similar systems to support P&C standards, relay settings documentation, drawings, compatible units, and related work products.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including presenting information, facilitating meetings, and providing guidance.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while completing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • Hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute of no more than 50 miles one way to the designated Duke Energy facility and have reliable, consistent transportation.
