About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director, Facilities Operations, the Lead Engineer is primarily responsible for providing lead direction and working with one or more groups or crews of skilled and semi-skilled workers involved in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems including heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, swimming pools, library retrieving system (LRS), and equipment throughout a campus.

Requirements

Knowledge of effective lead work practices and techniques
Working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to renovation and installation projects
Thorough knowledge of the applicable state and federal safety codes and regulations pertaining to mechanical and HVAC systems.
Journey-level skills in a mechanical and/or related HVAC trade.
Ability to maintain current in applicable industrial safety orders and regulations pertaining to facilities, HVAC and related equipment
Ability to plan and direct the work of skilled crafts workers and semi-skilled workers
Ability to determine and coordinate staffing, material and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects
Ability to perform basic design work
Ability to read blueprints and work from plans and specifications
Ability to prepare rough sketches
Ability to read and interpret complex operating manuals
Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
Ability to ensure accuracy and maintenance of assigned record-keeping systems
Ability to prepare more complex reports
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
Three or more years of experience working as a journey-level crafts worker in one or more applicable mechanical or related trades, including one or two years in a lead capacity.

Proficient use of computerized building automation systems to diagnose and troubleshoot problems with the ability to estimate cost, time and materials for project(s)
Experience with maintenance and operations of applicable heating and air conditioning systems and equipment
Experience in lead work practices
Thorough knowledge of high- and-low-pressure boilers and heating, pneumatic, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical equipment
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in the operation, maintenance and repair of such equipment
Knowledge of ventilation principles, thermal dynamics, and closed water systems
Knowledge of energy management systems including the ability to understand and use system features

Responsibilities

Perform installation, operation, repair and maintenance of campus HVAC systems and related components
Monitor and maintain Central Plant operations, including boilers, chillers, and energy systems
Troubleshoot system issues to ensure reliable and efficient performance
Schedule and execute preventative maintenance to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations
Oversee day-to-day operations of the HVAC shop, including scheduling and prioritizing work
Review work orders, assign tasks, and monitor progress using the Metabim Work Order System
Ensure availability of necessary materials and equipment by obtaining quotes and purchase orders
Prepare HVAC shop budget and assist in budget development for the Electrical and Plumbing shops
Provide on-site support and coordination for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) maintenance and repair activities
Facilitate repairs and maintenance for campus plumbing distribution systems
Conduct safety and performance inspections
Works in collaboration with management to ensure prompt response to system failures and disruptions to maintain continuity of service
Collaborate with the appropriate administrator to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll, overtime, and other personnel-related documentation.
Provide on-the-job training and guidance to less skilled workers, ensuring safe work practices are followed
Consult with facilities management on task prioritization and project planning
Coordinate and dispatch emergency HVAC response working in collaboration with the Work Control Desk
Collaborate with Capital Planning, Design & Construction (CPDC) and external contractors on HVAC-related projects and upgrades
