Lead Engineer - Thermal Dynamics

GE Vernova•Greenville, SC
•$89,300 - $148,700

About The Position

The Lead Engineer in the Aero-Thermal & Clearances Design (ATCD) team executes thermal design and analysis for turbomachinery hardware and architectures across GE Vernova’s gas power portfolio. The role supports the full product life cycle, including new product and technology introduction, testing and validation, and fielded product support. It requires expertise in heat transfer, secondary flow systems, and thermal analysis, as well as the ability to own work from concept through design review and final documentation with minimal oversight. The engineer works with global, cross-functional teams to deliver timely, accurate, high-quality outcomes and contributes to continuous improvement through Lean principles, innovation, and advanced analytical methods. The role includes up to 10% travel within the U.S. and is restricted to U.S. persons because it involves access to export-controlled technology. Relocation assistance is provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable engineering field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or thermal analysis and design for turbomachinery, or comparable experience.
  • U.S. person status, as defined in the job posting, is required due to access to export-controlled technology; proof of status is required before employment.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of additional relevant experience or an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable field, with specialization in Thermal Science, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Heat Transfer, or a related area, and a strong academic record.
  • Experience in thermal design and analysis of turbomachinery components, including heat transfer and secondary flow systems.
  • Experience with ANSYS Thermal, HyperWorks, CFX, ICEM CFD, or equivalent engineering analysis platforms.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project execution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical conclusions and recommendations clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively in a global matrix organization with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Strong customer and product mindset focused on quality, operability, and timely execution.
  • Ownership and accountability in achieving goals.
  • Experience using programming or scripting languages such as Python, Fortran, Visual Basic, or Java for engineering automation and analysis efficiency.
  • Ability to evaluate and select AI/ML strategies for long-term design system improvement.
  • Experience applying Lean tools to identify, evaluate, and implement innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently execute heat transfer, secondary flow, CFD, thermal analysis, and design activities for flange-to-flange stationary and rotating components across gas and steam turbine products.
  • Apply engineering principles and adhere to business standards, design practices, procedures, and product requirements.
  • Develop technical expertise in turbomachinery thermal design and independently resolve design and analysis challenges.
  • Execute work across conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases for NPI, NTI, and product support programs.
  • Build, assess, and improve thermal analysis models; interpret results; and prepare design review materials with clear conclusions, technical rationale, and recommendations.
  • Evaluate design trade-offs, identify risks, and propose solutions beyond established methods and parameters when appropriate.
  • Contribute to design improvement initiatives, technical problem-solving, and root cause analysis related to thermal performance, heat transfer, and secondary flow systems.
  • Identify and evaluate design-to-cost opportunities while balancing performance, durability, and manufacturing cost in partnership with Mechanical, Services, and Systems Engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with global mechanical, aerodynamic, performance, and clearance engineering teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Apply innovation in thermal design and analysis, including probabilistic methods, digital tools, automation, and AI/ML techniques where relevant.
  • Apply Lean principles, improve standard work, and contribute to engineering templates, best practices, and process improvements.
  • Document technical data, analysis outputs, assumptions, and conclusions; maintain complete, accurate, traceable documentation and model management.
