About The Position

The Lead Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership, engineering oversight, and project execution for high-voltage electrical infrastructure projects, including substations, transmission systems, renewable energy interconnections, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and utility modernization initiatives. This role serves as the engineering lead for multidisciplinary EPC projects from conceptual design through commissioning while ensuring technical excellence, safety, schedule adherence, budget performance, and client satisfaction. The ideal candidate is an experienced Professional Engineer with extensive expertise in transmission and distribution substation design, engineering management, utility standards, and the successful delivery of complex EPC projects. This individual will mentor engineering teams, interface directly with clients and utilities, and drive continuous improvements in engineering processes and project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university (required)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required
  • Ability to obtain additional state PE licenses as needed
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible electrical engineering experience
  • Extensive experience in utility transmission and distribution substations
  • Experience delivering EPC projects from concept through commissioning
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Experience serving as Engineer of Record
  • Strong client-facing and project leadership experience
  • Strong working knowledge of high-voltage substations (12kV–500kV)
  • Strong working knowledge of physical substation design
  • Strong working knowledge of ground grid analysis
  • Strong working knowledge of equipment specifications
  • Strong working knowledge of thermal and facility ratings
  • Strong working knowledge of utility engineering standards
  • Strong working knowledge of protection & control coordination
  • Strong working knowledge of SCADA integration
  • Strong working knowledge of renewable energy interconnections
  • Strong working knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Strong working knowledge of power system studies
  • Strong working knowledge of Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)

Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams on high-voltage EPC projects ranging from 12kV through 500kV.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) where applicable and provide technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Direct engineering activities from conceptual design through detailed engineering, procurement support, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables for quality, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop junior and mid-level engineers while fostering technical growth across the organization.
  • Promote engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead or oversee the development of transmission and distribution substation physical layouts, equipment arrangement drawings, foundation and structural coordination, ground grid design and analysis, electrical studies and calculations, equipment specifications, facility ratings, thermal rating calculations, bus and conductor sizing, cable routing and raceway systems, lightning protection systems, station service designs, high-voltage equipment selection, renewable energy interconnection designs, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integration, and utility modernization projects.
  • Act as Engineering Lead for multiple concurrent EPC projects.
  • Coordinate engineering disciplines including civil, structural, protection & control, relay settings, SCADA, communications, and construction.
  • Develop engineering schedules and resource plans.
  • Monitor engineering budgets and support project cost forecasting.
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Support procurement by reviewing vendor drawings and evaluating technical proposals.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, startup, and field issue resolution.
  • Serve as the primary engineering interface with clients, utilities, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in design review meetings and client presentations.
  • Support proposal development and technical sales activities.
  • Develop long-term client relationships through exceptional technical service and project execution.
  • Coordinate engineering approvals with utility owners and governing authorities.
  • Drive standardization of engineering practices, templates, and design procedures.
  • Implement software tools and automation to improve engineering productivity.
  • Develop best practices for quality assurance and engineering consistency.
  • Improve project workflows that enhance schedule performance and reduce engineering costs.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives focused on engineering growth and operational excellence.

  • Ensure engineering designs comply with OSHA, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NFPA, utility standards, and client specifications.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and hazard analyses.
  • Support incident investigations and corrective actions as required.
