About The Position

TerraPower is seeking a Lead Engineer, Natrium Pump to lead the design of the Primary Sodium Pump (PSP) and Intermediate Sodium Pump (ISP) for the Natrium Demonstration Project. Reporting to the Primary Heat Transport Manager, this engineer will direct pump design and testing and contribute to the primary heat transport system design. The role requires ownership of pump development and the ability to use expertise in pump hydraulics, mechanical design, and motors to resolve technical issues. The position also provides occasional support for primary heat transport system design, including coordination and integration of multidisciplinary analysis, application of design codes and regulatory criteria, schedule and design-package development, plant-system testing, and preparation of licensing submittals. The role is full-time and based on a salary range specific to Washington State. Travel is 0–10%.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited university and 12+ years of direct experience; advanced degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience.
  • Experience in centrifugal or axial pump design; reactor coolant pump design is preferred.
  • Experience applying ASME Section III Code design, preferably to rotating equipment.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with pump testing or qualification programs.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with electric motor operation and electromechanical concepts.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate and lead a design team's efforts with minimal direction.
  • Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints and resolve conflicts between objectives.
  • Ability to work on simultaneous tasks requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Experience applying quality standards to design activities, such as ASME NQA-1.
  • High degree of trust and integrity, open communication, respect, and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Must meet applicable ANSI/ANS 3.1 qualification requirements, including minimum education and experience criteria and relevant nuclear industry experience where required.
  • Ability to perform the position's physical functions, with or without accommodation, including safely lifting up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in reactor coolant pump design.
  • Experience applying ASME Section III Code design to rotating equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage technical requirements for the PSP and ISP, including preparing or reviewing design specifications and ensuring correct application of ASME code rules to component design and fabrication.
  • Provide technical oversight of the PSP and ISP designer and review vendor deliverables for owner acceptance.
  • Support pump design by performing thermal-hydraulic or mechanical analyses using hand calculations or software-based methods.
  • Lead PSP and ISP design reviews.
  • Help develop testing requirements and specifications, and provide technical oversight for pump-related testing.
  • Coordinate with other engineers on physical and fluid interface requirements and design.
  • Coordinate and integrate results from analyses such as thermal, seismic, structural, pipe-stress, and heat-transfer analyses into plant design and operational decisions.
  • Identify and ensure appropriate application of design codes to plant systems, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, and NFPA.
  • Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process-system designs.
  • Support planning and schedule adherence for system design activities and their integration with the overall plant-design delivery schedule.
  • Coordinate drawing packages, including P&IDs, 3D models, and system-interface drawings.
  • Work with design disciplines to develop plant-design information and specify system-design and performance criteria.
  • Establish and maintain system requirements and design-basis documents for the primary heat transport system.
  • Propose and initiate plant-system qualification testing programs as needed.
  • Provide support and oversight during test execution, evaluate test results, and report results.
  • Generate design packages for systems, subsystems, and equipment, coordinating calculations, design reports, mechanical drawings, and engineering design specifications.
  • Support Natrium Demonstration Project licensing activities by assisting with licensing submittals.
