About The Position

The Lead Engineer - Distribution Planning will be responsible for leading, mentoring, and developing others toward a common objective. This includes leading a team towards the successful completion of commitments through coaching, completing area studies, compliance, regulatory support, and capital projects. The role involves collaborating on and performing distribution comprehensive area studies, processing and representing data from analytical software, and applying established distribution criteria to identify system deficiencies. The Lead Engineer will also recommend Distribution Automation devices, develop designs for distribution resiliency, and continuously strive to innovate and improve the efficiency of Distribution Planning. A thorough understanding and application of Distribution Planning tools such as GIS, SAP, and Load Data systems are essential. The role also requires seeking out and developing subject matter expert skills to mentor and support the team, and collaborating with internal teams and industry peers. Assistance during storm restoration efforts is also expected.

  • Theoretical Engineering knowledge: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytics, Modeling & Calculation (e.g. sym. Components, per unit, etc.), Understanding the Business Model - Advanced Competency Level.
  • Practical Engineering Experience/Application: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g. field experience, standardization, develop business case and defend in front of stakeholders) - Advanced Competency Level.
  • Engineering documentation: Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation, review and approve engineering work done by others - Advanced Competency Level.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment: Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and Requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.) - Advanced Competency Level.
  • Power System Studies - Knowledge & Interpretation of Study Assumptions and Results: (e.g. Comprehensive Area Studies, Power Flow, DER, Voltage, Contingency, phase imbalance, Power Factor correction, Short Circuit, reliability, resiliency, Capacity, distribution automation, etc.) - Advanced Competency Level.
  • Software Proficiency - Power System Analytics: (e.g. CYME, PSSE, ASPEN, etc.) - Advanced/Expert Competency Level.
  • BSEE required.
  • 7+ years of experience (Industry Related).

Nice To Haves

  • Additional consideration given to applicants with Advanced Degrees or Certifications (e.g. MSEE, PE, etc.).
  • Offsetting industry and other relevant technical skills will be considered for candidates without previous experience in these Distribution Planning activities (e.g. T&D Engineering, P&C, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop others toward a common objective.
  • Lead a team toward the successful completion of commitments through coaching, completing area studies, compliance, regulatory support, and capital projects.
  • Collaborate on and perform distribution comprehensive area studies including voltage, thermal, N-1, and power factor assessments.
  • Process, manipulate, understand, and represent data produced by analytical software, contained in power system study reports, or extracted from databases.
  • Apply established distribution criteria and sound utility engineering practices to identify deficiencies in the distribution system.
  • Cite and interpret applicable reliability criteria (e.g., IEEE 1547, 519, 1366 Standards, ANSI Voltage Standards, NFPA, etc.).
  • Recommend Distribution Automation devices to the system and develop designs and recommendations compliant with program objectives.
  • Apply established distribution criteria for Distribution Resiliency to the system and develop designs and recommendations compliant with program objectives.
  • Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of Distribution Planning.
  • Develop thorough understanding and application of Distribution Planning tools used in day-to-day basis such as GIS (SMWeb, SmartMap), SAP, Load Data systems, etc.
  • Seek out and develop subject matter expert skills as necessary to mentor, support and lead the team to aid in the advancement of business needs.
  • Collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional and divisional activities.
  • Assist during storm restoration efforts.
