About The Position

Avathon is seeking a Lead Engineer, Cloud Operations to manage the production environment for their Industrial AI autonomy platform. This role involves overseeing the reliability, security, cost, and deployment of applications across multiple cloud providers (GCP, AWS, Azure), customer-managed Kubernetes clusters, and edge deployments. The position is hands-on, requiring the individual to design infrastructure, write automation, participate in on-call rotations, and establish operational standards for the engineering team. The platform supports applications in Asset Performance Management, Supply Chain Intelligence, Visual AI, and Global Trade Management, utilizing a Computational Knowledge Graph foundation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years in cloud infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps roles.
  • 3+ years of experience leading engineers.
  • Deep hands-on experience with at least two of GCP, AWS, and Azure.
  • Production experience running Kubernetes at scale, including Helm and container tooling.
  • Strong infrastructure as code skills with Terraform or similar.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and release automation (e.g., GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, Argo CD).
  • Experience with observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK stack).
  • Scripting and automation skills in Python, Go, or Bash.
  • Working knowledge of cloud security, IAM, and network design.
  • Clear communicator who remains calm during incidents.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, or similar compliance programs.
  • Experience supporting on-premise, hybrid, or air-gapped deployments.
  • Experience operating data platforms (e.g., Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, streaming).
  • Experience operating GPU and ML workloads.

Responsibilities

  • Own uptime, performance, and incident response for SaaS environments and customer-hosted deployments.
  • Define SLOs, monitoring, and alerting across application services, data pipelines, and model serving.
  • Manage incident response, conduct blameless postmortems, and drive issue resolution.
  • Develop runbooks and on-call practices to support customers across different time zones.
  • Design and manage multi-cloud infrastructure on GCP, AWS, and Azure using infrastructure as code.
  • Operate and scale Kubernetes (GKE, EKS, AKS) for various workloads, including GPU inference.
  • Manage CI/CD and release processes for safe and frequent deployments, including to single-tenant and on-premise environments.
  • Support edge and air-gapped deployments, including packaging, upgrades, and remote configuration.
  • Own cloud security baselines, including identity and access management, network segmentation, secrets management, encryption, and audit logging.
  • Support customer security reviews and compliance programs, particularly for regulated and defense sectors.
  • Track and reduce cloud spend, ensuring clear cost allocation by product and customer.
  • Plan capacity for growth in data volume, tenants, and model workloads.
  • Lead and grow a team of cloud and DevOps engineers, setting priorities, reviewing work, and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, data, and ML teams on architecture decisions impacting operability.
  • Work with forward-deployed and customer success teams to set up new customer environments and support go-lives.
  • Report on reliability, incidents, and cost to engineering leadership.
