Lead Electrical Engineer

INFICON•East Syracuse, NY
•$120,000 - $135,000

About The Position

INFICON is seeking a versatile Lead Electrical Engineer to work at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and AI. This technical leadership role balances New Product Development with sustaining engineering. The engineer will set technical direction for assigned subsystems and help evaluate how AI-enabled tools can improve electronics workflows; it is not a people-management role. The position is part of INFICON’s Electrical Engineering team in Syracuse, New York. The team designs precision electronics for sensor and instrumentation products, spanning high-precision analog circuits, digital and embedded systems, RF electronics, power supplies, PCB layout, component selection, and prototype testing. Designs range from breadboard-level MVPs through series production. The role covers end-to-end electronic design and product lifecycle work, including architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, validation, production launch, field troubleshooting, and product improvement. The engineer collaborates across hardware, software, mechanical, and product functions in a cross-functional Agile environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5–10 years of experience in electrical and embedded systems design, including taking products from concept through production and maintaining the product lifecycle.
  • Expert-level proficiency in EDA tools such as Cadence OrCAD.
  • Deep understanding of analog and digital circuit design, power management, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Experience designing and implementing systems centered around MCUs, DSPs, or FPGAs.
  • Ability to act as a product owner for assigned subsystems and make data-backed decisions under ambiguity.
  • Versatility in moving between high-level architectural work and detailed troubleshooting of production issues.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban and with task-management tools such as Jira.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with precision analog electronics design.
  • Interest in collaborating with physicists, chemists, materials scientists, software engineers, and mechanical engineers to develop products.
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and guiding other engineers on technical topics.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end design from initial concept and schematic capture through high-density PCB layout to production launch.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in high-precision analog design, digital electronics, power management, embedded systems based on MCUs, DSPs, or FPGAs, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate DSP solutions into larger system architectures, ensuring interoperability and debugging complex system-level issues.
  • Balance New Product Development, including prototyping, validation, and innovation, with sustaining engineering, including troubleshooting field issues, managing component obsolescence, and driving cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Build breadboard MVPs, validate assumptions with customers, and iterate using a lean, hypothesis-driven approach.
  • Review designs, test plans, and documentation, and provide technical guidance to other electrical engineers.
  • Participate in Agile team sprints and communicate across hardware, software, mechanical, and product functions.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, new component technologies, and design methodologies, and help evaluate their potential impact on workflows.
