The Electrical Design Engineer functions in a mid-level engineering capacity performs all aspects of conventional and nuclear design engineering. The engineer in this position must have an aptitude for practical engineering, a willingness to immerse oneself in the position and rapidly learn the business, ability to work with little supervision, have strong leadership skills, and be willing to travel periodically.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10-15+ years of electrical engineering experience supporting commercial nuclear, DOE, power generation, or other complex industrial facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading electrical design efforts on multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of low- and medium-voltage power distribution systems, including transformers, generators, switchgear, motor control centers, motors, protective relays, and power system protection schemes.
  • Extensive experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, specifications, and design packages.
  • Proficiency with ETAP or comparable power system analysis software.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, Navisworks, or similar platforms.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and nuclear industry design requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-development capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Highly detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with clients, project teams, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience serving as a technical lead, discipline lead, or project engineering lead is preferred.
  • DOE and/or Commercial Nuclear experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, review, and coordination of electrical engineering designs for commercial nuclear, DOE, and other highly regulated industrial projects.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to electrical engineers and designers, ensuring deliverables meet project requirements, quality standards, budgets, and schedules.
  • Serve as the electrical engineering subject matter expert for complex design challenges and technical decision-making.
  • Review, approve, and provide quality oversight of engineering calculations, specifications, studies, drawings, and design packages.
  • Lead and perform detailed AC and DC power system analyses using ETAP, including: Short Circuit Studies, Protective Device Coordination Studies, Arc Flash Hazard Analyses, Voltage Drop Studies, Motor Starting Studies, Load Flow and System Capacity Evaluations.
  • Develop engineering recommendations based on study results and ensure compliance with applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Develop design criteria, scopes of work, engineering packages, and technical documentation.
  • Lead constructability reviews and design optimization efforts throughout project execution.
  • Design and review electrical power distribution systems, grounding systems, lighting systems, communications systems, security systems, and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Support engineering change evaluations and manage design modifications throughout project lifecycles.
  • Develop and review technical equipment specifications, bid packages, and procurement documentation.
  • Evaluate supplier proposals and provide technical recommendations for equipment selection.
  • Coordinate vendor interfaces, review vendor drawings and submittals, and manage technical inquiries throughout the procurement process.
  • Coordinate electrical engineering activities with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, structural, civil, I&C, and construction personnel.
  • Act as the primary electrical engineering contact for clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Support project planning, resource forecasting, proposal development, and technical reviews.
  • Identify project risks, scope changes, and opportunities for cost and schedule optimization.
  • Provide technical support during construction, startup, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Assist with resolving field design issues and developing practical engineering solutions.
  • Travel to client offices, vendor facilities, and project sites to support design reviews, walkdowns, and construction coordination.
