About The Position

As a Lead Design Engineer at Samsara, you will build the systems that power the company’s products and scale the impact of the design team. You will define components, patterns, tokens, and guidelines for both people and AI agents to use, working across design and code to ship highly interactive web and mobile UI. You will codify principles, heuristics, and quality standards for AI generation. Your work will influence how quickly teams can build, how reliably products behave, and how confidently customers use them. This is a remote role open to candidates residing in the United States.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of experience in design engineering, design systems, product design, or front-end engineering, building UX/UI for web and mobile applications.
• Shipped design-system or component-library work, with a portfolio, case studies, or code samples explaining what was built, the decisions made, and how teams adopted it. Applications without a portfolio cannot be considered.
• Strong interaction and visual design skills, including judgment about when to use an established pattern and when to create a new one.
• Experience with design tokens, theming, and accessibility standards.
• Regular use of AI tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Figma Make, with shipped work attributable to those tools and experience connecting them to a design system.
• Ability to explain, review, and debug AI-generated code.
• Experience partnering with designers, engineers, and product managers on short cycles.

Responsibilities

• Develop core system components, evaluations, and feedback loops to improve AI design and code generation.
• Govern quality and design taste through structure, preventing low-quality AI-generated work from reaching customers.
• Ensure system decisions translate cleanly into code, with shared ownership of quality, performance, and maintainability.
• Build accessibility, responsiveness, and performance into the system by default.
• Establish contribution, governance, and deprecation models that balance speed with system integrity.
• Meet regularly with designers and engineers who use the system, and use their feedback and usage data to guide future work.
• Share effective AI tools, workflows, and tactics with the wider design and engineering teams.
• Champion and model Samsara’s cultural principles as the company scales globally.
