About The Position

TrustEngine is hiring a Lead Data Platform & Database Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of its relational database and data estate. TrustEngine is the product of a merger and operates two technology stacks in AWS: C#/.NET with Microsoft SQL Server, and TypeScript/JavaScript with MySQL. SQL Server is licensed under BYOL and installed, configured, and operated by the company on EC2; MySQL runs on RDS. The role is part of the Platform team and serves as the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams. The immediate priority is a time-critical operating-system upgrade before year-end. Longer term, the role will assess the inherited estate, establish direction and standards, and mature the environment so it can meet the expectations of customers, auditors, and the company’s insurer. The core of the position is current, hands-on Microsoft SQL Server administration, including full installation and configuration on self-managed Windows Server infrastructure and OS-level work beneath a live production instance. The successful candidate will also bring Windows Server administration and upgrade experience, SQL Server high-availability expertise, MySQL administration, AWS knowledge, and applied AI proficiency. Prior end-to-end ownership of a production database estate and experience setting data standards across application teams are required. Snowflake administration and development, along with broader data engineering, warehousing, analytics, governance, and migration experience, are preferred.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience.
  • Deep and current Microsoft SQL Server administration experience.
  • Recent hands-on experience with full SQL Server installation and configuration on a server the candidate manages, using Windows Server on EC2 or on-premises; experience must include OS-level work beneath a live production instance and not rely solely on a managed service such as RDS or Azure SQL.
  • Windows Server administration experience, including OS upgrades and migrations.
  • The most recent SQL Server upgrade must be stated on the candidate’s profile, including source and target versions, in-place or side-by-side approach, year, and Windows Server version pairing; career-span claims without versions will not be considered.
  • SQL Server high-availability experience, including Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • MySQL administration experience.
  • AWS experience with EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • AI proficiency applied to day-to-day work, with Claude given as an example.
  • Prior end-to-end ownership of a production database estate, including assessing an inherited environment and driving measurable improvement.
  • Experience setting data standards and reviewing schema and data-access design across application teams.

Nice To Haves

  • ETL pipelines and tools such as Rivery and dbt.

  • BI/analytics experience and tools such as Metabase and QuickSight.
  • Data governance and data quality practice.
  • SQL Server migration to a managed service such as RDS or an equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the inherited database environment and drive it to a measurably better state.
  • Execute a time-critical operating-system upgrade before year-end.
  • Establish direction and standards to mature the data environment.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams.
  • Administer Microsoft SQL Server, including installation, configuration, and operation on self-managed Windows Server infrastructure.
  • Administer Windows Server, including operating-system upgrades and migrations.
