About The Position

TrustEngine is hiring a Lead Data Platform & Database Engineer to take end-to-end ownership of its relational database estate and serve as the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams. The company was formed through a merger and operates two stacks: C#/.NET with Microsoft SQL Server, and TypeScript/JavaScript with MySQL, both in AWS. SQL Server is self-managed and runs BYOL on EC2, while MySQL runs on RDS. The immediate priority is a time-critical operating system upgrade before year-end. Longer term, the engineer will assess and improve the inherited environment, set direction and standards, and mature the estate so it can meet the expectations of customers, auditors, and the company's insurer. The role is on the Platform team and has a mandate to address the database estate comprehensively rather than apply isolated fixes.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience.
  • Deep, current Microsoft SQL Server administration experience; SQL Server is the core of the role.
  • Recent hands-on experience installing and configuring SQL Server on a server the candidate manages, such as Windows Server on EC2 or on-premises; managed services such as RDS or Azure SQL do not meet this requirement.
  • Experience performing OS-level work beneath a live production SQL Server instance.
  • Windows Server administration experience, including OS upgrades and migrations.
  • Must state the most recent SQL Server upgrade performed, including source and target versions, whether it was in-place or side-by-side, the year, and the Windows Server version pairing; career-span claims without versions will not be considered.
  • SQL Server high-availability experience, including Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • MySQL administration experience.
  • AWS experience, including EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • AI proficiency applied to day-to-day work, for example with Claude.
  • Prior end-to-end ownership of a production database estate, including assessing an inherited environment and driving it to a measurably better state.
  • Experience setting data standards and reviewing schema and data-access design across application teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Snowflake administration and development; the data engineering team covers Snowflake day to day.
  • ETL pipelines and tools, such as Rivery and dbt.
  • Data warehouse design and development.
  • Data lake experience on S3.
  • BI and analytics experience with tools such as Metabase and QuickSight.
  • Data governance and data quality practice.
  • SQL Server migration to a managed service such as RDS or an equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Own the database and data estate end to end, including assessment of the inherited environment and driving measurable improvement.
  • Plan and perform a time-critical operating system upgrade before year-end.
  • Administer Microsoft SQL Server, including installation and configuration on self-managed Windows Server infrastructure on EC2 or on-premises.
  • Perform Windows Server administration, including operating system upgrades and migrations.
  • Manage SQL Server high availability using Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • Administer MySQL.
  • Set data standards and review schema and data-access design across application teams.
  • Establish direction and standards to mature the database environment.
