About The Position

The Lead Custodian plays a key role in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming campus environments that support student success and daily operations. This position provides on-shift leadership for custodial staff by coordinating work assignments, monitoring service quality, supporting employee training, and ensuring custodial standards are consistently met across assigned facilities. Working closely with the Director of Building Specialties, the Lead Custodian serves as a resource for staff, helps address operational challenges, and contributes to a positive campus experience through exceptional facility stewardship and customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Two years of custodial, facilities, building services, or related experience.
  • Experience operating custodial equipment and using cleaning chemicals safely.
  • Experience coordinating work activities, training and supporting employees, and maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and respond to changing operational needs.
  • Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure Exceptional Facility Cleanliness and Service Standards
  • Maintain assigned buildings and facilities in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition.
  • Conduct routine inspections to verify custodial work meets established quality standards.
  • Address service concerns promptly and communicate facility issues to appropriate departments.
  • Support event setups, special projects, and campus activities to ensure facilities are prepared and operational.
  • Coordinate Daily Custodial Operations
  • Assign and adjust daily work priorities to meet operational and staffing needs.
  • Serve as the primary resource for custodial staff during assigned shifts.
  • Monitor building conditions and respond effectively to changing campus requirements.
  • Coordinate resources and staffing coverage to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Develop and Support High-Performing Custodial Teams
  • Train, mentor, and support new and existing custodial staff.
  • Reinforce departmental procedures, service expectations, and best practices.
  • Foster positive working relationships and effective communication among team members.
  • Assist in creating a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote Safe and Efficient Operations
  • Ensure compliance with custodial procedures, safety standards, and proper chemical handling practices.
  • Monitor equipment and supply inventories and communicate maintenance or replenishment needs.
  • Identify and report safety, security, maintenance, or operational concerns.
  • Support efficient use of resources while maintaining high-quality custodial services.
