About The Position

WSP is seeking a Lead Consultant/Transportation Planner for its Detroit, Michigan office. This role will function as a project manager for transportation planning projects, developing solutions for complex transportation issues, mentoring staff, engaging in client-facing activities, and producing high-quality planning deliverables. The ideal candidate is a creative and analytical planner capable of taking ownership and adding value to transportation projects. The position requires experience in Michigan or similar transportation markets, leading project tasks such as data collection, research, and documentation for various transportation plans (statewide, regional, local, corridor, transit, multi-modal feasibility, rail, managed lanes). Daily responsibilities include contract management, client relations, overseeing technical planning work, guiding team members in producing deliverables, and presenting findings to clients and stakeholders. This role involves collaboration with internal WSP teams, governmental agencies, subcontractors, the public, and other WSP personnel. The successful candidate must be a team player, a self-starter, possess strong analytical, communication, collaboration, and technical skills, and have a demonstrated ability and interest in mentoring staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Engineering or a related discipline
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team, work cross-functionally and think critically and strategically
  • Familiarity with Michigan transportation planning issues
  • Familiarity with MDOT, RTA, DTC, DDOT, and SMART planning procedures
  • Ability to effectively present and communicate ideas orally and in written form
  • Critical, strategic and creative thinking skills
  • Strong ability to collaborate with individuals and teams
  • Computer skills (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS)
  • Ability to gather and analyze data critically and develop supporting information and reports
  • Understanding of project administration and management
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Experience leading public and stakeholder outreach activities

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Engineering or a related discipline
  • AICP certification

Responsibilities
