Job Description: The lead medical assistant is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the medical practice. They may be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting physicians with patient care, front desk, environmental and organizational tasks. Essential Functions: Fulfills patient care responsibilities, as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure room, assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc., collecting patient history, performing screenings per provider guidelines, assisting physicians with various procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, answering calls and providing pertinent information Fulfills clerical responsibilities, as assigned, which may include sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc., completing forms/requisitions, answering telephones, patient registration, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, front desk payment collection, managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately Fulfills environmental responsibilities, as assigned, which may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols, cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control, ordering, sorting, storing supplies and restocking exam/procedure rooms Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities which may include; checking vital signs, physical examination preparations, drug administration through various routes including injections, prescription verifications with physician’s orders, minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal, biohazard waste disposal and monitoring, laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) guidelines, quality control methods, CLIA waived testing, capillary punctures and venipuncture’s, specimen handling such as urine, throat, stool and sputum, electrocardiography including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid including CPR Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times Performs other duties as assigned Additional Job Description: Education: High School diploma or GED/equivalent (required) Experience: No prior experience required for Certified Medical Assistants newly graduated from a vocational/technical training in Medical Assistant Six (6) months of experience in clinical setting for uncertified applicants (required) Certification: Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) (preferred) UofL Health is a fully integrated regional academic health system with nine hospitals, four medical centers, Brown Cancer Center, Eye Institute, nearly 200 physician practice locations and more than 1,000 providers in Louisville and the surrounding counties, including southern Indiana. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED/equivalent (required)
  • No prior experience required for Certified Medical Assistants newly graduated from a vocational/technical training in Medical Assistant
  • Six (6) months of experience in clinical setting for uncertified applicants (required)
  • Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) (preferred)
