About The Position

Under general direction of the Director of the Mustang Success Center, the Lead Athletic Academic Advisor performs a variety of complex assignments requiring operational cross-division coordination and administrative planning with other areas of the University (e.g., Athletics Department, Evaluations, Residential Life, Student Life and Leadership, Career Services, Student Academic Services, College Advising Centers, etc.). The Mustang Success Center (MSC) provides comprehensive, centralized developmental academic advising to support undergraduate students with their successful transition and integration into Cal Poly. The center’s staff guides students to clear pathways of success and timely graduation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead programming including Student-athletes, Cal Poly Scholars, first year success initiatives, assessment, orientation, change of Major, or new initiatives.
  • Lead continuous program improvement initiatives by developing feedback loops and tracking programmatic impact specifically for student-athletes.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct Student Services related programs, instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars for student-athletes including registration workshops, orientation sessions, etc.
  • Act as a primary liaison to work collaboratively with students, faculty, campus, and academic departments to advance students’ personal and academic goals through advising, resource coordination, program development, and ongoing student support.
  • Develop solutions to individual student problems which represent integrative solutions comprising appropriate elements of all appropriate Student Services instructional programs.
