About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is seeking a Lead Assembly Technician for the second shift to oversee and organize small technician teams in conducting all assembly activities for the SPARC Tokamak. This role involves the handling, alignment, and mechanical integration of large electromagnetic coils, vacuum vessels, instrumentation systems, support structures, tooling, diagnostic systems, and superconducting cable bundles. The Lead Technician will leverage extensive experience in building and handling large equipment to ensure efficient and high-quality completion of SPARC. Responsibilities include organizing daily work orders, assigning technicians, adjusting plans based on progress or issues, conducting morning briefs and shift hand-off reports, and guiding all assembly activities. This position requires direct collaboration with engineers, the metrology group, the quality group, and other team members to ensure precise component completion and to identify and resolve build process issues. The role operates in a dynamic and flexible environment, adapting to shifting priorities to meet project schedules for the next-generation tokamak device. This is a unique opportunity to contribute hands-on assembly skills to accelerate fusion energy development.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years in a highly technical assembly role (e.g., aerospace/aircraft, semiconductor, oil & gas, power plants, wind, racing & automotive)
  • 2 to 3 years overseeing a team of five people or more
  • Experience completing large scale projects end to end
  • Experience assisting lifting operations
  • Knowledge of standard joining and integration methods (bolted interfaces and flanges, welding, epoxies, etc.)
  • Highly self-motivated, organized, and passionate about their work
  • Highly safety conscious
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities: Stooping, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • May need to operate in small confined places in odd locations
  • Work locations could include being on platforms around 25 feet high
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years in a highly technical assembly role (e.g., aerospace/aircraft, semiconductor, oil & gas, power plants, wind, racing & automotive)
  • 3+ years leading a team of ten people or more
  • Can operate a forklift
  • Ability to use basic machining tools (e.g., lathe/mill)
  • Experience creating designs for tooling
  • Experience using JIRA, Manufacturo, or other software based tracking
  • Experience with organizing rigging and direct oversight of heavy components lifting
  • Knowledge of rigging and lifting best practice
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems and clean room best practices
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems
  • Prior experience in independent design and construction of small fixtures and tooling
  • Experience with metrology tools and precision alignment of components
  • Willingness to occasionally travel for required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Dedication to safety

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day activity management and coordination of the technician teams to complete assembly operations per the overall schedule.
  • Review of work orders, including mechanical, welding, electrical, and lifting tasks.
  • Participation in major on-site operations, such as important component lifts and movements.
  • Inspection buy-off (visual confirmation only) for tasks completed by the technician teams.
  • Daily updates to the rest of the Assembly team on the status of each operation or work order and what was completed that day.
  • Assignment of each technician or technician team to specific operations and work orders, as needed for schedule priorities determined by planning.
  • Coordination with out-of-house work teams working on specialized sections of SPARC assembly when they arrive, ensuring efficient work completion.
  • General troubleshooting of assembly issues, developing workarounds, or escalating issues as necessary.
  • Assistance in all aspects that help keep the technician teams moving forward smoothly.
  • Notification to Assembly Engineers of problems or the need for non-conformance reports in a specific assembly.
  • Coordination with the Assembly Testing Team on their upcoming or ongoing activities to ensure efficient and safe work completion for all teams.
  • Daily kick-off meetings and shift-change meetings to outline shift activities, team assignments, major events, safety hazards, and other details for efficient and safe team operations.
