About The Position

Skanska is seeking a dynamic Lead AI Application/Software Engineer to join their Digital team. This role focuses on designing, building, deploying, and supporting lightweight applications for Skanska USA Building business use cases where existing enterprise tools or commercial solutions are not suitable. The engineer will collaborate closely with IT architecture, information security, and business stakeholders to translate ambiguous business needs into scoped, shippable solutions. A key aspect of the role involves using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, while rigorously reviewing, testing, and hardening AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability. This position will also establish practical development, deployment, documentation, and code review standards for custom software at USB. The role will advise on build-versus-configure decisions, define approved deployment paths with architecture and security partners (emphasizing Azure-first options, rapid application platforms, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD), and support citizen developers with guardrails and code review. The need for this role stems from USB's business requirements that cannot be met by commercial or configured platforms, necessitating an accountable, standards-driven engineering capability for safe and sustainable solutions.

Requirements

7+ years of experience with professional software development including production applications owned end to end
7+ years of experience using at least one modern application stack (Python/TypeScript)
5+ years of experience with data modeling and application security fundamentals
3+ years of experience using Azure PaaS
2+ years of experience with hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Github, Copilot, Codex, or Cursor
2+ years of experience reviewing and testing AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability

Responsibilities

Designs, builds, deploys, and supports lightweight applications for Skanska USA Building business use cases.
Translates ambiguous business needs into scoped, shippable solutions.
Uses AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery.
Rigorously reviews, tests, and hardens AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
Establishes practical development, deployment, documentation, and code review standards for custom software.
Advises on build-versus-configure decisions, including when not to build custom software.
Defines approved deployment paths with architecture and security partners.
Supports citizen developers with guardrails and code review.
