Onsite

About The Position

The Le Magazaen Operations Supervisor is a hands-on leadership position responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan’s cultural space, Le Magazaen. This position oversees three integrated streams: a gift and art shop featuring Métis-made goods, a rotating cultural gallery, and a rentable boardroom/meeting space. This is an on-the-floor, front-of-house position. The supervisor is the operational backbone of Le Magazaen responsible for opening and closing the space, directing two part-time employees, serving customers and guests, coordinating bookings, and ensuring every visitor experiences the richness of Métis culture in a welcoming, professionally run environment. The ideal candidate is organized, community-minded, and comfortable moving between retail, people supervision, venue coordination, and cultural programming.

Requirements

  • Strong frontline leadership and the ability to direct employees in a busy, public-facing environment.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Comfortable with point-of-sale systems, cash handling, basic bookkeeping, and reporting.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage bookings, scheduling, and inventory simultaneously.
  • Culturally sensitive and professional in all interactions with Métis citizens, artists, and the public.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and community priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in a retail, hospitality, gallery, or customer-facing environment.
  • Diploma, certificate, or degree in Business Administration, Retail Management, Indigenous Studies, Arts Administration, Tourism, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation to our downtown location.
  • The successful candidate must undergo a Criminal Record Check.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Métis language, culture, and traditional practices; ability to speak Michif, Cree, and/or Dene is a significant asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of MN-S history, culture, and values.
  • Knowledge of Art Condition Reports will be considered an asset.
  • Previous supervisory or team leader experience preferred.
  • Experience working within or alongside MN-S or other Indigenous organizations is a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close Le Magazaen, manage the shop floor, and ensure a high standard of customer service throughout the day.
  • Operate point-of-sale systems, process transactions, and complete daily cash reconciliation and sales reporting.
  • Manage inventory levels, coordinate restocking, and maintain organized merchandising displays that highlight Métis artisans and products.
  • Receive and process new product intake, including consignment items from Métis artists and vendors.
  • Maintain the gallery space daily, ensuring displays are clean, well-presented, and visitor-ready.
  • Coordinate with the Curator, artists and cultural partners on rotating exhibitions, product placement, and display schedules.
  • Support the coordination of cultural events, artist talks, workshops, and educational programming held within the space.
  • Assist with cataloguing, documentation, and care of cultural assets and gallery inventory.
  • Promote the gallery and its artists to visitors, tourism partners, and the broader public.
  • Manage bookings for the Le Magazaen boardroom and meeting space, including inquiries, scheduling, confirmations, and invoicing.
  • Prepare and reset the boardroom before and after each booking; ensure AV equipment, furniture, and supplies are ready.
  • Serve as the on-site contact for boardroom users, ensuring smooth and professional experience.
  • Track rental revenue and maintain accurate booking records for reporting purposes.
  • Develop and enforce a clear rental policy and rate structure in collaboration with the Manager.
  • Directly supervise two part-time employees: assign daily tasks, manage scheduling, and provide on-the-floor direction and support.
  • Onboard and train new part-time employees on shop operations, customer service standards, and cultural protocols.
  • Providing regular feedback and address performance concerns to the Manager of Economic Development, Tourism & Vendor Relations.
  • Model a respectful, culturally grounded workplace culture at all times.
  • Maintain accurate daily records including sales, inventory, bookings, and employee hours.
  • Prepare regular operational updates and reports for the Manager.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone, email, and in person in a timely and professional manner.
  • Support grant reporting, funding documentation, or program deliverables related to Le Magazaen as required.
