About The Position
The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) Office of Legal Affairs is hiring a Lawyer 1 and a Lawyer 2 to provide legal support to programs serving Montana residents, including vulnerable populations. The office’s work spans healthcare and Medicaid law, labor and employment, civil rights, administrative law, regulatory practice, and other areas. The role is suited to attorneys motivated by public service and the department’s mission to improve health, safety, and well-being and empower independence across Montana communities. The position may be eligible for partial telework within Montana, subject to conditions set by the supervisor and state policy. Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- For Lawyer 1, at least 3 years of post-licensure legal experience; for Lawyer 2, at least 5 years of post-licensure legal experience.
- Active admission to practice law in Montana, or in an area of law relevant to DPHHS programs, with eligibility and commitment to obtain Montana licensure.
- Knowledge of healthcare law or areas of law directly relevant to DPHHS programs.
- Knowledge of the Montana legislative process.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of the Montana Administrative Procedure Act (MAPA) and administrative hearing practice.
- Experience advising government agencies, judicial review of agency decisions, or other institutional clients.
- Litigation experience.
