About The Position

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term position reporting to a Senior Manager and the Director of the Research & Education stream. The role will support the Office of the General Counsel by providing high-quality legal services to support the University’s objectives. The focus will be on providing legal services for teaching and learning, research activities, national and international collaboration initiatives, and day-to-day legal issues for a large, internationally focused university. The role involves drafting and reviewing agreements, advising on Higher Education statutory/regulatory obligations, and supporting the adoption of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The successful candidate will provide accurate legal advice, conduct research, analyze results, and propose solutions to complex issues. They will also contribute to continuous improvement within the Office of the General Counsel and build strong relationships with stakeholders.

Requirements

  • A tertiary qualification in law (LLB) and be a qualified legal practitioner, either practising or entitled to practice in Victoria, with a current Legal Practising Certificate.
  • 1-3 years’ post-admission experience at a mid or top tier law firm and / or sector or commercial in-house experience.
  • Highly developed planning skills.
  • Advanced computer literacy.
  • Ability to manage a significant file load under pressure while maintaining absolute discretion and ethical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Providing and supporting the delivery of legal services under the guidance of senior lawyers across a wide range of matters arising from teaching and learning and research activities and national and international collaboration initiatives, as well as day to day legal issues arising for a large and internationally focused university.
  • Drafting and reviewing agreements, advising on Higher Education and related statutory/regulatory obligations, and supporting the University’s adoption of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
  • Providing quality, accurate legal advice and guidance to clients that responds to their needs and objectives.
  • Undertaking research, analysing results and providing recommended solutions to complex issues.
  • Reviewing or drafting in plain English for various audiences in a clear and succinct manner.
  • Contributing to the implementation of continuous improvement activities relating to the Office of the General Counsel practices and procedures.
  • Building and sustaining strong working relationships with an extensive network of internal and external stakeholders.
