About The Position

This position involves managing a team of attorneys who provide legal advice to the JPMC Chief Data & Analytics Office (CDAO). The role includes directing workloads, processing personnel actions, overseeing daily duties, and reviewing team work product. The lawyer will advise on firmwide policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines related to artificial intelligence (AI) and CDAO activities. A key responsibility is managing a firmwide legal support model for JPMC's AI activities, including chairing an AI forum of lawyers from various business lines, corporate functions, and global regions. The role also entails structuring and negotiating agreements with vendors and third parties concerning AI, maintaining precedent contractual language reflecting global regulatory requirements, and structuring/negotiating joint research agreements with universities, national laboratories, and commercial entities. Additionally, the lawyer will provide legal advice to the firm's AI Research team and projects from the Machine Learning Center of Excellence, support teams developing internal employee-use products and platforms for AI deployment and governance, and advise on legal risks associated with ingesting third-party AI models (including licensing, IP, privacy, and cybersecurity). The position requires overseeing the firmwide legal risk assessment process for internal AI use cases, advising on legal and regulatory changes related to global AI regulations, and partnering with business, regulatory, and government relations stakeholders on AI policy engagement. The lawyer will also conduct due diligence for strategic investments/acquisitions involving AI, act as a legal subject matter expert in AI during M&A transactions, provide frequent updates to senior management, and train the legal department, business colleagues, and control function partners on AI legal risks. This role requires up to 10% domestic travel.

Requirements

  • Master of Laws or equivalent
  • 6 years (72 months) of experience in the job offered or as Lawyer CDAO Legal, Emerging Technology Lawyer, International Regulatory Lawyer, or related occupation.
  • Four (4) years of experience with establishing a trusted advisor relationship with senior technology managers who carry out research, development, procurement, deployment and implementation of AI within a global bank.
  • Four (4) years of experience presenting complex legal and technological AI and data concepts to lawyers, compliance professionals, risk officers, and other stakeholders within a global bank.
  • Four (4) years of experience analyzing existing, proposed, and adopted EU and UK regulations as they may impact the use and development of AI by global banks.
  • Four (4) years of experience assisting with the creation of a regulatory implementation and compliance strategy within a global bank.
  • Four (4) years of experience analyzing legal risk associated with open source and commercially available AI models and data sets used to train artificial intelligence algorithms in the global financial services industry.
  • Four (4) years of experience identifying legal issues associated with AI development and data used to train AI models.
  • Four (4) years of experience drafting contract language and negotiating complex agreements between global banks, major cloud platforms, and other third party providers of AI technologies.
  • Four (4) years of experience with algorithm development; fine tuning of language models, natural language processing, and associated coding concepts.
  • Four (4) years of experience evaluating legal implications of complex technological innovations in the AI industry and related business use cases at a global bank.
  • Four (4) years of experience advising on potential AI use cases in an in-house legal department within a global bank.
  • License to practice law in IL or limited license as in-house counsel in IL.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on firmwide policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines as they relate to artificial intelligence (AI) and CDAO activities.
  • Manage a firmwide legal support model for JPMC's AI activities, including chairing an AI forum of lawyers from all lines of business, corporate functions, and global regions.
  • Structure and negotiate agreements with vendors and other third parties relating to AI, including maintaining precedent contractual language reflecting global regulatory requirements.
  • Structure and negotiate joint research agreements with universities, national laboratories, and commercial entities.
  • Provide legal advice to the firm's AI Research team and projects developed by the Machine Learning Center of Excellence.
  • Support the teams developing products and platforms for internal employee use, both for AI deployment and AI governance.
  • Advise on legal risk relating to the ingest of third-party AI models, including licensing, intellectual property, privacy, and cybersecurity legal risk.
  • Oversee the firmwide legal risk assessment process for internal use cases leveraging AI technologies.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory change relating to global AI regulations, including horizon scanning, interpretation, and business implementation.
  • Provide legal advice to Model Governance and Risk partners on evolving AI governance requirements.
  • Partner with business, regulatory, and government relations stakeholders to engage, educate, and help guide regulatory and industry policy related to AI, including reviewing and drafting proposed position statements, responses to requests for information/consultations from regulators, and meeting with banking or financial industry trade groups.
  • In connection with strategic investments in, or acquisition of, technology companies, conduct due diligence to the extent the target engages in AI and work with the M&A team as the legal subject matter expert in these fields during the course of the transaction.
  • Provide frequent updates and reports, both verbal and written, to senior Legal and business management.
  • Provide training to the legal department, business colleagues, and control function partners on AI legal risks.
