About The Position

Colorado Legal Services (CLS) is seeking law student interns for its Denver Family & Children Unit. This internship offers hands-on experience in family law, allowing interns to work directly with clients from day one. Interns will perform a variety of duties, including client interviews, case investigation, drafting legal documents such as pleadings, motions, and notices, and conducting legal research. Depending on authorization under Colorado's Law Student Practice Act, interns may also have the opportunity for direct representation in court. The role involves participation in weekly staff meetings, attending client meetings, court hearings, mediations, and settlement conferences. Additionally, interns will engage in community outreach activities to understand client needs within the context of their daily lives. This position is ideal for students seeking practical exposure to family law and a commitment to serving low-income individuals.

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to legal issues affecting low-income individuals
  • Strong interest in research, writing and interviewing
  • Candidate should be confident and able to work both independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Client interviews and case investigation
  • Drafting of pleadings, motions, and notices in Dissolution of Marriage, Allocation of Parental Responsibilities, or Civil Protection Order actions
  • Legal research memoranda and briefs
  • Direct representation at court hearings (if authorized)
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Attend client meetings, court hearings, mediations, and settlement conferences
  • Participate in community outreach activities
