About The Position
The Law School Externship Program Director oversees the law school externship program in accordance with American Bar Association (ABA) rules and institutional policies. Designs externship courses and programs, including student assessments, exams, and/or papers. Manages enrollment and approves placements. Evaluates and monitors the quality of the externship experience. Conducts periodic program reviews to improve learning outcomes and student experiences. Develops programming and resources to educate students about externship opportunities. Teaches externship courses, workshops, and academic components of the program and advises externship students. Develops and facilitates employer relations to create externship opportunities. Acts as a liaison to field supervisors, field placements, and other external partners and stakeholders. Manages all externship records. Promotes the externship program and experiential learning opportunities through student and community programming.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of experience; OR Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited institution and one (1) year of experience.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Enthusiasm for working closely with student populations.
- Ability to manage projects and balance competing priorities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with an array of individuals.
- Ability to understand, analyze, and apply ABA standards, institutional policies, and other regulations applicable to externships.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with teaching, academic assistance, academic counseling, or administrative assistance in a higher education institution.
- Experience working in a law practice.
- Familiarity with the Alabama legal community.
