About The Position

Public Safety Officer (PSO) patrols assigned areas to prevent crime and detect violations of law. This role performs journey-level duties or entry-level special agent duties. May be considered a Master Public Safety Officer with greater than 6 months experience in law enforcement. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Issues warnings and citations to violators. Apprehends and arrests violators. Investigates alleged or suspected violations of criminal law. Conducts surveillances and performs undercover assignments. Develops and uses informants to obtain information. Public Safety Officer conducts background or other administrative investigations. Interviews witnesses and suspects. Work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in manhunts and providing executive protection. Testifies in court and other legal proceedings; prosecutes defendants in magistrate's court. Keeps records and makes reports regarding activities. Plans, directs and coordinates law enforcement activities within the designated area of responsibility. Executes orders from superiors. Explains orders, messages and decisions to subordinates; advises subordinates of changes in laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Provides guidance and on-the-job training to other law enforcement personnel. Monitors patrol activities and recommends changes to improve effectiveness. Supervises and evaluates law enforcement personnel.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma.
  • Certification by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council, in accordance with State Law (23-23-40) is required.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months experience in law enforcement (for Master Public Safety Officer positions).
  • Some positions require a commercial driver's license.

  • Patrols assigned areas diligently, giving particular attention to and often checking those locations where security problems have been most frequent.
  • Enforces the laws of SC and the rules and regulations applicable to MUSC in a fair and impartial manner.
  • Courteously assist all persons seeking directions, information or assistance.
  • Makes preliminary investigations and submits necessary reports accurately and completely.
  • Responds punctually to all assignments and immediately to all emergencies.
  • Project a positive and professional image of the Department to the MUSC community.
  • Inform the relieving officer of all information or concerns that would be of interest or importance to him/her in the proper performance of their duties.
