About The Position

The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is seeking a Law Enforcement Officer for its Campus Police Department. FSDB is a state public school providing educational services at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired, or deafblind, including boarding and transportation. The Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators on FSDB properties. This role involves identifying and investigating suspicious incidents and crimes, processing crime scenes, collecting evidence, filing criminal charges, general traffic enforcement, and responding to calls for assistance. The officer will also assist with building and grounds inspections for safety and security violations, conduct crime prevention patrols, review shift paperwork, operate computer and communication equipment, perform special tactical assignments, manage crowds, testify in judicial proceedings, and secure buildings. Related or similar duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

  • One year of law enforcement experience (sworn or non-sworn).
  • Two years of public contact experience or 2 years of active and continuous military service can substitute for the required experience.
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the required sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be a high school graduate or its “equivalent”.
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Have his or her processed fingerprints on file with the employing agency.
  • Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, based on specifications established by the Commission.
  • Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
  • Possess a current certificate of compliance for basic employment certification issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
  • Ability to maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license and meet FSDB requirements to operate a state vehicle.
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24.
  • Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain Intermediate proficiency in sign language within four years of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and investigates all suspicious incidents or reported crimes on FSDB properties to include: processing crime scenes, collecting and preserving evidence for court, filing criminal charges, general traffic enforcement and responding to calls for assistance from campus.
  • Assist with the inspections of buildings, equipment and grounds for safety and security violations, reporting of those safety/security violations to the appropriate FSDB Department.
  • Conduct crime prevention patrols in accordance with the department's philosophy of Community Oriented Policing Strategies.
  • Review all paperwork for accuracy and completeness issued by that shift at the end of the assignment tour of duty.
  • Operates computer and two-way communication equipment.
  • Perform special tactical assignments, crowd control and testifies in judicial proceedings, opens, and secures building for staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
